Yes, it's that time again... Quickest upgrade?

Yea, I pretty much put QOL first on my list as long as I can survive on the pay. I don't think I'm going to put in any more time at a company that I don't wholly support and believe in. I already applied to Air Whisky and I'll be applying to Delta (with stark reverie) and maybe ASA. Even then, there's other opportunities that catch my fancy outside of airline flying and the airline route is still not a definite thing for me.

This thread was started as more of an educational discussion and hoping that one of the better regionals might have an upgrade that isn't too long based on forecasted factors at that airline.

Thanks for the input.

I forgot my sarcasm tag.

Well, I guess if opinions are like you-know-what then a strong sense of sarcasm is like a giant unsightly mole. Not everyone has one, but they're annoying and hard to ignore no matter how hard you try. :insane:

:D

You know what's wrong with the right seat? The pay. Otherwise, you're flying the same trips, and that's about it. If I was making better money, I could sit right seat in my current airplane the rest of my career and that'd be peachy.

That's the thing. Captain pay at many regionals is where FO pay should be in a perfect world. If I was making $50,000 in the right seat I would have been fine with staying a few years to get some experience. In fact, I would prefer it. As an FO though I was almost going into debt most months. $1200 a month is not a living wage for a professional. As a result I upgraded very green, and I felt very green. But I had to, I had a kid in daycare and needed to come up with another $1000 a month to pay for it.

Congrat's, We have great snow plow drivers here at MSP. You will love them.... :)

Well, ya know now, I'm looking forward to it - same time zone as ORD and 10 commuter flights a day all blocked at about an hour. As long as I pay attention to weather issues it should be my easiest commute yet...

Ya, you betcha'!

Kevin

Does it really matter....? Given the choice of Bears or Packers.....I rather not be a fan....

Go Vikes :rawk:

Except dat da Bears and da Packers are bot' 2-0 my friend...

And da Vikings?...........0-2

Doh!!?!

I will probably see you on the commute. This is my first month on the 88 in MSP. The same time zone commute will be nice. I did the DTW commute last year.

Exactly... but why pay when people show up just for the experience!

Sorry for the barrage of questions lately, but what regional do you guys think will have the quickest upgrade time? I have 2800 hours and 1100 turbine SIC so I guess it would depend for me on how they choose upgrades...

Not that upgrade time is the only thing to consider, but the only thing missing from my resume is turbine PIC.

Yez, me tooz. I haz 6000tt 4000 tooBin and I knees meez sum jeT engine Skippy time soooOoOo my limo can-kumz pick me upz 4s my big airplane class. Wheres can I upgRadz? Sooner da betta!! Ya kNow!

Heck, even the regionals that treat like crap don't really have a "quick" upgrade. The first CA upgrades in over 2 years finally got posted here at 9E. Most junior CA? 4 year mark, and she's not THAT junior to me. If I had hopped on the JFK bandwagon, I'd still be 7 from the bottom in base. That's the same place I am in MEM. The next several upgrades are likely gonna be the FOs that got stranded because they were waiting to hold a line instead of being abused on reserve. Well, the music is starting again, and they don't want to be left out. Those guys are in the 5-8 year range. Then there's the whole SLI with Mesaba that'll toss a wrench into the time table, too.

I upgraded ASAP at 9E for two reasons #1 I want out of here, and TPIC is a necessary thing to have in order to do that. Sure, you CAN get hired at Delta or jetBlue without it. However, it's an extremem rarity reserved for people with much better internal connections than I have. #2 I was tired of living on borderline food stamps even flying 95 hours a month.

Being stuck on reserve for as long as I have really beats into your head how the "Quick upgrade and out" philosophy has been the major driving force in what is known as "the suck" at the regionals. FOs don't care if their pay is low, because they'll be CAs soon. I know I was told this a number of times whenever I brought up the poor FO pay. "Oh, but just think! You'll be making CA pay in a year!" Tell that to the poor SOBs that have been slugging it out for 2+ years on reserve as FOs here. They may see the right seat in a few years if they can stick it out.

Even when you DO upgrade, the "quick out" mentality is evident. The senior guys don't care about reserve because to them, it was an event that lasted a few months, if it happened at all. They play the "Just pay your dues" card. However, it's tough finidng any senior guys that spent 3 years on reserve. Some of our guys have been on reserve 5 since they came in essentially street CAs. They're CLOSE to holding a line, but with no movement, #1 reserve and #55 on reserve don't really have a lot of difference in them. As a result of this mentality, work rules suck for reserves. The FOs didn't spend much time on reserve, the CAs didn't, so why bother wasting negotiating captial? Easy. Times have changed.

Don't go chasing a job based on quick upgrade. I came to 9E because I didn't want to commute. I'm one of the LUCKY ones that upgraded and actually held on to his seat and base through numerous displacements. You never know what will happen. If the price of oil spikes, all those majors that are forecasting to hire could go right back to parking their "growth" airplanes in the desert or deferring their deliveries.....again.

Another thing to think about.... often the companies that offer the quickest upgrades have very high turnover for a reason. Sometimes these are the companies you should be avoiding.

If the industry were to slow down and come to a halt, personally Id rather be in the right seat at a good company that treats me well, than in the left seat at a crap one.

I'm at best agnostic about chasing "turbine PIC" (I've got well over 1000, and mysteriously UPS, FDX, and SWA aren't beating down my door), but if your only goal is to get in the left seat of a jeeeetttttt so you can post pictures on facebook, pax 135 charter operators may upgrade you quickly if they need someone, you don't seem like an idiot, and you meet the ARGUS/WYVERN mins. They also tend, from my experience, to look favorably on jet SIC time when hiring. Good luck.

Thanks!!!! That's the nicest thing I've heard all week. :D lol

That was meant as a quantification of the requirements, not a personal observation. I don't know you well enough to determine whether you seem like an idiot or not. ;)

That was my second goal. My first was to be like this guy, but I couldn't come up with a cool enough call sign:

"Rough Rider". You're either a gay cowboy or a tough, stupid, essentially fearless freightdoggy. Either way, you're scary.
