New "controller" at KJFK Tower...

You'll notice that almost everyone that DOES know the system doesn't give a darn about this. If we can talk some sense into the argument, this wouldn't be an issue. Problem is, we can't.

Well, it kind of sucks... I can't go on the record with a TV station or newspaper - just my letter to the FAA Administer (I'll post it tomorrow). But I will talk to some people I know in the 'biz tomorrow and let them know - it is really hard for them when they can't get anyone to be on camera though...

For anyone that doesn't think it matters - PLEASE, write a letter, it really does matter.... You would not believe how many people I had to explain this to tonight.

I wonder if my students are going to get in trouble for when I had them visit the local tower during their training and the guys had them record ATIS?

DOOOOOM!

I was also at a Tower once and they let a visitor record the ATIS.

Can you realize what would have happened if they wrecked the callout on the altimeter setting? Did the guy who authorized that realize what happened in "Die Hard 2"?

...that planes will crash because they don't know the altitude, because Eastern European terrorists are ingested by the engine(s) or because Bruce Willis leaves a trail of Jet A and lights it as the planes take off?

They all seem equally probable to me.

I consider bringing children into a tower to be an innately poor decision at best. Dangerous and lacking in common sense. What does he know about directing traffic? One false move and hundreds of people are toast, we all know this. This is not the FAA being the "big meanie", disciplinary action IMO is very well deserved in this matter. Keeping properly certificated people at the helm and radar screen while reducing distractions as much as possible is the least we can do to keep aviation safe.

This is not "cute", it's just dumb.

...you know what I consider dumb? Flying when you know, know that you shouldn't be!

It's not cute, it's just dumb!

:yeahthat:

SFO closed its parking lot for watching airplanes because of 9/11. If someone wanted to sneak onto the AOA, there are a million and one ways to do it where no one would see them, why the hell would they do it in front of 50 people in a public lot?

So much for attracting "the best and the brightest", 20 years from now the only driving force for learning to fly will be SJS.

What is SJS?

When I worked in airport operations we would routinely find lapses in security which were not a big secret given enough thought. If someone wants to get into/onto airport property it isn't that hard. If more airports supported spotter areas they would be able to put cameras on those people and have an easy way to identify the locals. Airport ops and security would know the locals too and meet people from all over the world who travel just to look at airports and airplanes. These people still have the wander lust which most of the rest of the world has lost. Albiet most are quite nerdy.

Back to my experiences...most of the ideas and suggestions at the airport I worked at were balked at from our security department since they truely felt only they had the answers.

So some kid who could have developed a sincere love of and for aviation now may end up hating it for the rumpus of misdirected attention his calls on the radio are attracting.

The USA really needs to pull its tail out from under its legs and grab a pair.

According to Oberstar as said in that Youtube clip, "All individuals in the cab at that time are in trouble for nto reporting that". Even though Oberstar is not "my rep", I ahev always liked what he had to say. He has seemed to be a good thing for aviation with his spot on the Transportation Committee.....

This gets worse every day.:o

I loved CBS news this morning. "was it just a lapse in judgement or was it a MAJOR SECURITY BREACH!?! (their heavy emphasis on the security breach)"

then the former ntsb investigator, "what if the flight with the would be bomber had landed at Jfk instead of Detroit?"

Give me a break.

This is all getting out of hand. I have no faith left in our media.

There are almost 200 people listening to JFK tower on LiveATC currently. Most I have ever seen was around 60. I wonder how many of these are news stations waiting to catch some dirt.

Not sure if it has been brought up, but I cannot believe that the media has not screamed....."how can people be listening to ATC....That website is a breach of security.... The tuurists are gonna get us......" d000000000mmmmm.
