This thread smells of moral superiority.
They took off with full fuel.
I don't know about anyone else. But If i was a land owner or farmer, And a pilots engine failed and he had to make an emergency landing on my property. Honestly i wouldn't care if some of my crops were damaged. Because a human life is more important to me than a couple of plants. And i know that if i was a pilot in that situation i would hope that that land owner would feel the same.
Not everyone is like that. A few years ago my friend lost an engine, put it down in my neighbor's Alfalfa field. My neighbor sent him a bill for the ~$200 worth of Alfalfa that was damaged. An expensive landing fee but well worth it.
Interesting. Was there an official cause established?
"About two minutes into the flight, the engine quit," Davis said Monday. "And I don't know why it quit. We had plenty of fuel."
once upon a time A lear (i believe) landed short at downtown KC. very short, like the other side of the river in between some warehouses. I dont think anyone was injured.
The guys landed the airplane w/ no damage to themselves, plane, or property. How could this situation turn out any better?
Everyone requires a little luck no matter how good you are. Let us not forget about the tragedy that happened last year to this community. As much as instructors like to drill it into your head fields aren't always the best option. Hit a little bump or hill in the field and it could very easily be game over when traveling at 60+ MPH.
Sometimes they're the only option. It just depends. Sometimes you're dealt a crappy hand, such that you were dead that day before you even took off, only you just didn't know it.
The grim reaper of aviation doesn't discriminate.
That's a pretty defeatist attitude.Sometimes they're the only option. It just depends. Sometimes you're dealt a crappy hand, such that you were dead that day before you even took off, only you just didn't know it.
It IS true though. Sometimes you can do everything right and still end tragically. That's a pretty defeatist attitude.

Yeah I know. Your post seemed to imply that that previous comment was pessimistic. I was just pointing out that it's more realistic.I don't recall debating that.

I don't think I was implying it so much as stating that.Your post seemed to imply that that previous comment was pessimistic.
