Wow...

I saw that awhile back. I thought both guys did a decent job of staying calm and looking for options.

How bad would setting it down in one of those lakes sucked? Couldn't be worse than a house right?

Another thing...he actually turned into a driveway/parking lot (after he landed) . Very impressive!

Guy I met a while ago had to do something similar, I believe in a 172, but after they landed on a road, and turned into a parking lot for a park, a park ranger came up to the airplane said "Hey! You can't park here." He told me he just shook his head and told him off LOL.

Sorry I don't agree with all the "Wow" and "Impressive" people.

The co-pilot pointed out 3 fields (whether they were viable options I don't know) - but, more importantly, roads have nasty things like telephone wires and electrical wires strung all around them especially in residential areas.

As PIC you are to aviod endangerment of persons or property at the surface - your choice to fly not theirs. Put it in the lake and pray you survive, but don't needlessly put other people at risk.

No kudos here.

So who did he endanger (in this particular case)? The road on his side was empty and you could see that from the video. I agree with you if it is rush hour on a busy road, but thats just crazy to say you will pass up a empty peice of nice wide pavement and put it in the water or trees regardless of circumstances...:dunno:

We can sit here and Monday morning QB this thing all day. Until everyone's been through a situation like that, I don't think its fair to criticize what he did/didn't do. Sure, we can say, "I would have done it that way, or this way" but until you're in the situation, I don't think anyone can truly say for sure what's going to happen.

The key's here are: The pilot & passenger are alive, and nobody got hurt.

Sorry man, but if I can choose from a road in the middle of the day in great visibility vs a lake, I'm taking the road almost every time. There will be no praying I survive and at the same time, I didn't see where he "needlessly" put other people at risk. You've got an emergency, you do what you need to do. If that means landing in Farmer Joe's driveway, then that's what you do. You avoid endangering people or property in normal situations. In an emergency, screw the property. Plus, fields and lakes can have power lines crossing them, too.

As a general rule of thumb I would choose an open field before I'd take a lake or a road.

Take a close look at this picture and you'll see wires on the aircraft. For that reason alone I'd be very very leery about trying to land on a road.

The next time you are out driving pay attention to how many wires there are that cross the road. Except out in the wide open country the dang things are all over the place!

Lakes are pretty bad about flipping aircraft over on their tops. That can be, uh, problematic as well.

Maybe he knew the area. The whole point of talking about wires and flying is the fact that they are nearly invisible, NOT that people should be afraid of even thinking about landing on a road. Use ALL available information, including what's in your brain about the local area, and make a good decision. Maybe they were just really darn lucky...who knows.

That's why you need to be looking down the sides of the road and along the exterior of the field or lake to see if there are poles for wires to cross said road, lake or field.

If you know what you're looking for and the visibility is good enough, the road is probably the 2nd best option with the lake being a distant 3rd.

...unless you're Hillary Swank and trying to land the space shuttle in a "river" in the LA area. Then that's the best option!

I think I can almost say that a lake is about my LAST option. And in an emergency I can assure you avoiding endangerment of property is not my main concern. Other people, then myself/passengers. If it's take out a parked car and knock down a stop light vs hoping the impact with the water doesn't kill me and that I don't drown after that...the city can bill me for the stop light.

You're a better man than I.

1) Me
2) Pax
3) People on the ground (that can get out of the way)

.......somewhere around #987 is someone's property.

I don't know if I can live with myself if I killed someone on the ground and I survived. That's not to say I wouldn't weight that risk with the risk of my passengers and my life and then act accordingly.

Property not even a consideration.

Can't imagine it'd be easy. Like the A-7D Corsair in Indianpolis in '87. Or the A-7D in Tucson in '78.

I certainly wouldn't think so.

You trying to say something about the A-7 by the way?

Naw....just the two cases off the immediate top of my head where the pilot had to bail out due to failure of the single engine, and unfortunately over a populated area where there were civilian deaths as a result. Just unfortunate, one moreso than the other circumstantially.

I wasn't too impressed with his lack of attention to the pole while pulling into that driveway. It seems for a second that while rolling down the road he forgot that he is actually in a plane and not in a car.
Nevertheless, nice landing.
