Watch List for flying?

I would say try to get a medical. If the FAA doesn't jump on you then, go ahead and start your training.

As far as getting certificates, the medical is the only "background" check you have to do. If you want to fly solely for recreational purposes, I don't think you will have a problem. Should you want to fly professionally, you may want to try to find out a real answer to your question before you start shoveling out major bucks for your training.

True your name is on the watch list, but it is not for you. Hence the reason that you CAN fly.
The watch list problems will be going away soon with the TSA secure flight and such. Now birthdate must be recorded at time of ticket purchase.
As long as you can prove you are on the person they are looking for it will be possible for you to get a certificate. Might be a little more hassle though.

However my uncle is on the list because there is someone deserving of it on the list that apparently shares his name. It is a pretty big hassle for him as he is a frequent flier.

It's not me, but there are a few pilots that I know that are on "the list" because of common names.

"Your flight crew for today is Captain John Smith, commanding, with F/O John Smith assisting him. Jane Smith will be in the forward cabin, with Jane Smith and Jane Smith in the rear."

Change your name to Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab. Apparently he doesn't have any issues getting on a plane :bandit:

maybe they ought to put down the ghormeh sabzi and get with the program! Then they wouldn't be on the list!

I just had ghorme sabzi for dinner (good stuff man):D :D opsss

But on the serious note, I've heard no matter how hard you try; you can't get your name off that list (as mentioned here already).

I guess I don't even understand why they came out with this list initially!!! What good does it do?

The nofly list does have DOB data, but even if you are 2 years old, you're still quad S for life if you match a name on the list, and not all the names are of Middle Eastern origin despite what some people think.
