Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight..

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

My question is...a lot of the reports say that he used a syringe to mix this stuff. My mom is an insulin dependent diabetic. If she is not allowed to get up an hr before landing and has to give herself an insulin injection, will she be pummeled by a do-gooder who thinks she is a terrorist???

I think the syringe he used is a little bit more heavy duty than the 0.5-1.0 cc syringes used for insulin.

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

A little more on the new rules:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_airline_attack_regulations

So then, when someone tries something at the beginning of a flight, it'll be a new rule prohibiting movement in the first part of a flight.

Then, when someone tries something mid-flight, it'll be no moving at ANY time during a flight...

This will probably affect that ONE bonehead on EVERY flight who finds it necessary to get up from his/her seat right after takeoff, or just before landing to either go to the restroom or get something from an overhead.....all while that pesky seatbelt sign is still illuminated.

:D

I dunno some of my mom's insulin "pens" are made from brushed aluminum and come in this case...I wouldn't put it past some bumpkin who wants to save the day trying to knock it out of her hands...

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

One thing I don't get is why security measures are always REactive, in response to an incident? Why can't the TSA, airlines, and law enforcement come up with PROactive measures designed to prevent terrorist attacks before they happen?

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

Well I hope that a lot of people are going to be jobless. If what CNN is reporting is true, I'm just lost for words...How can the security apparatus be missing this guy ??!! Why would be allowed a visa, airplane access etc etc... !!
Quote from CNN:
"The father of a man suspected of trying to bring down a Northwest Airlines jet recently contacted the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria about concerns that his son had "become radicalized" and could be planning something, a family source told CNN Saturday." "
The father, Alhaji Umar Mutallab, recently retired as chairman of First Bank PLC in Nigeria, one of the nation's premier banks. He contacted the U.S. Embassy about his fears, said the source, who lives at the family home in Kaduna in northern Nigeria.
About three months ago, the family source said, the father contacted various security agencies and the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the capital, about a text message he had received from his son the day before." "

The family member said the son "had no family consent or support." He "absconded to Yemen."
"His mother has not been sleeping for months. She is on medication to sleep," the source said."

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

With the whole "last hour of flight" deal, all I see coming from it is FAs having to babysit all of the pax, and get yelled at/mocked/etc. about the rule by pax. Let's be honest, it wouldn't prevent a damn thing.

Sad, but true.

It leaves me at a loss for words, too. If this man was on a TERRORIST WATCH LIST, then WHY was he allowed to board an aircraft, and WHY was he given a visa to come to the U.S.? At the very least, he should have been subjected to extra security screening, and should never have been allowed to enter the U.S.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

So how do they know when there's 1 hour left in the flight? If the plane overshoots the destination by 150 miles, how am I supposed to know that I can use my personal devices for an extra 40 minutes?

Well played.

he wasn't on the terrorist watch list.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

If this allows fellow passengers to dogpile the retards who go to the lav in the descent or start getting their crap out of the overheads while taxiing, I'm all for it.

You should have been on my recent flight from LAX-JFK...it was loaded with a bunch of Russians transferring to Moscow...I swear they got up after the reversers were stowed.

Yes he was, may be not on the do not fly list but on "some terrorist" watch list. The father was so desperate that he apparently contacted several agencies. That's our $ at work, I had several experiences with not so bright dpt of state employees abroad... I can visualise them dismissing or underestimating the info and warning given to them, perhaps it was the evening piece of conversasion at the local expat watering hole. There is absolutely no excuses as to why this guy was even able to get close to any airport !!

Sucks that the FAs will have to put down their US Weekly and check to make sure I don't have my North Face in my lap.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

So what exactly does this 'no standing\moving about an hour before landing' accomplish? Nothing on your lap while an hour out also? What exactly does the TSA hope to accomplish? Prevent another terrorist attack while descending? So I guess what they're telling us is that terrorist attacks can only occur during the last hour of flight. Like I said before, I'm still waiting for the 'no carry on' rule to start.

TSA is a joke, this incident is just more proof at how flawed the system is.

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

The only reference I've seen is a New York Times article, nothing more.

I wouldn't loose any hair or risk a weekend or irritable bowel syndrome over it yet.

Oh, it's very real. I had a nice conversation with WS in the E concourse lounge this afternoon about it. There is some more stuff that they wanted to do, but the company shut them down. Kinda SSI, so I'll save it for another type of comms.
