My friend has...

In January. It's been a crazy 2009.

I've been well, I'm going back to school next month at one of our state schools. Trying to get some work around here as an instructor, it looks pretty decent actually, but otherwise just working a full time "normal" job and living.

What about you?

To the original discussion, I see the opportunity to network, develop my skill/knowledge base, and keep myself involved as incentive to take the bad with the good (EG crap tasks, sitting around bored, etc). There's a lot to be by learned just hanging around. I guess that makes me some kind of unprofessional scab though (ooogitty boogiddy booga).

Man you said it right there 2009 was a crazy year. Riddle let me go in May and I took the summer off and traveled the US on my flight benefits from US Air and then Riddle called me back for an instructing position and I got into an argument with I. Grau (Chief Pilot) and pretty much told them I was through. Moved to ORL and got a job as a charter broker and did that for a few months and called it quits on that too and then just got a job flying a Citation I,SII, Ultra and 414.

Original Topic: Yeah that sucks pretty bad but it seems like it doesn't really get any better. I've got a fairly descent position flying right seat in Citations and have been with the company for a month and only logged 5 hours (1 trip). I know, I know be grateful I have a job but I hate having the mentality of hurry up and then just wait. But then again I guess thats what Part 135 Charter is. The other times i'm sitting in the airport FBO on call or in the maintenance hanger wondering why the airplanes are down for no pay.

guess its all a matter of how much he wants the job. Unfortunately if its the only job in the area he'll just have to suck it up. It does suck though!

All that extra work for no pay...Wow.

I mean, if he's getting paid for it, okay great, go do it. It sucks, but being on the bottom kinda sucks sometimes. But going to work for a full day for free? Absolutely not. Go find another patsy.

How can you not be paid for it? What is this "at will" stuff mean? Educate me.

Involves a state (Virginia in this case) not needing a real reason to let you go. In other words, you can't sue for wrongful termination when they show you the door because they don't think a team player.

D, good to hear. Glad you have work. Looks like it's still the right seat of the old Cessna for me, but I love it. Flew one Thursday that was fresh off the production line... ten hours on the hobbs. New airplane smell does exist.

At will does not mean, not paid. You must get paid for work, unless the duty is part of the employment. You can not get fired for doing something and not get paid. That is wrongful termination. They must have written reasons and they must document the actions. At will just means that they have no recourse, but they still have to terminate you for real reasons. There is a process that must be followed. But the reason will be simple, like you showed up 5 seconds late, then you are gone.

Even in at-will states there are still things you can't be terminated for. Even in at-will states you still have to be paid the minimum hourly wage, unless you are an exempt employee and flight instructors are not exempt employees in most cases.

I'd like to find out from "your friend's" boss to find out what he exactly he planned on doing with his snow free airplanes.

I thought "your friend" was getting out of instructing?

In a lease till January then I make some decisions. I love flying but hate the BS. Guess it's just the name of the game. My car couldn't get out of the parking lot today so we will see what happens tomorrow.

That boss should clean the plane himself.

Reminds me of the time when one of my instructors wanted him and i to tidy up the plane the day before my checkride with the feds. I straight up said that i am the customer and i'll never do that . He didn't mean any harm by it though, he just likes company so he wanted us to clean the plane so he'll have something to do..lol.

We had a policy that renter/students/customers leaving the plane in a manner other than found (which was cleaned, belts put away, control locks in place, charts back where they belong, etc.) would be charged actual cost +50% for the cleaning (whether that meant paying an instructor their hourly rate to do it or hiring an outside company to do it).

I liked that policy.

Wait...You refused to clean up the plane you were going to be taking on your checkride? I would assume since it is my responsibility to make sure that the plane is in good order, the documents are where they need to be, and nothing is in the plane that shouldn't be. Customer or not taking a bit of pride and extra care never hurt anyone.

I don't think he meant it like that. Being told you have to is different than doing it on your own initiative. I do agree though, many renters leave the plane trashed and think nothing of it.

Thats not what i meant. Of course i have to make sure the documents are in order but what i'm saying is i would never wash the airplane or wipe down the inside if i am a customer and do not work for that flight school. Why the heck should i do that when i am paying full price for rental?

I do agree its a good policy and i always make sure i leave the plane the same way it was found out of consideration for other renters but i would not go out of my way and leave it spick and span. Thats what flight instructors are there for:p

I like that too. Can we extend that to unreported squawks?
