...to come into work on Sunday to wipe snow off of airplanes when he doesn't have any students. Best part is he lives 1.5 hours away from his airport, doesn't have any students that day but still has to get up at 6:30am, and isn't getting paid for it. He loves "at will" work states.
 
With the exception of MT (and I think there are some limits there) aren't all states "at will".

If the owner wanted the airplanes safely flown in the winter he would rent hangar space like anyone else with an ounce of sense.
 
How many people work there?

The school I'm re-instating my CFI at has three employees. For them, that kind of stuff is the nature of the beast. If I worked there and was asked to come in and plow/clean/do preventative mx/ etc, I'd suck it up and make a productive day out of it. Of course it would blow, but on a cold weekend day, so does anything that doesn't involve hot food, TV, or a bed.

So I'm the minority. I'd be out there with coffee, pushbroom, and scraper.
 
See, This is why I love the place I instruct at... I'm an independent as far as coming in and leaving when I want but an employee when it comes to everything else.

No one calls me at 4AM and says come clean the airplanes off.. If I have someone scheduled I come in. Or I come in to hang out if I want, But I'm not obligated too.

The down side is I supply most of my own students, but nothings perfect.

Hey man, how have you been, havent talked to you in a while. Did you move back up North?
 
This issue of coming into your work place, doing work, and not getting paid for it is not an at will issue, per se. What it is, is the employee accepted the offer of being paid for flight hour only. Or some rot like that.

So how many have learned the lesson? Why is instructing for free such a bad thing yet performing non-instructor duties for free is only an infraction and fodder for a bitchfest? Both are equally the mark of a major lapse of character and professionalism Crap, I said the P word...largely wasted breath here.
 
But since your "friend" is gonna limp in anyhow, might as well make a day of it. Bring some resumes and print stock for the business cards you'll be making to hand out to the transient pilots. You never know who'll be stopping by. Selling yourself into that next job isn't a crime yet. And by Gawd, come hell or high water, wear a f***ing smile!

In January. It's been a crazy 2009.

I've been well, I'm going back to school next month at one of our state schools. Trying to get some work around here as an instructor, it looks pretty decent actually, but otherwise just working a full time "normal" job and living.

What about you?

To the original discussion, I see the opportunity to network, develop my skill/knowledge base, and keep myself involved as incentive to take the bad with the good (EG crap tasks, sitting around bored, etc). There's a lot to be by learned just hanging around. I guess that makes me some kind of unprofessional scab though (ooogitty boogiddy booga).
