Pilots Loading Bags? Good or bad...

re: 121 pilots throw bags or no? (and some Allegiant stuff)

I just laughed out loud for realzzzz!

*edit* Ah I can't get the quote to work right. I was laughing at your statement Holocene.

re: 121 pilots throw bags or no? (and some Allegiant stuff)

But, with the theatrics as they are presently - obviously the 50% of pilots who wouldn't jump down to the ramp to toss bags are scum.
And once again, if you help with carry-ons at the jetway thats your call, but don't point fingers at the guys who choose to do it.

Lining bags up in the jetway is one thing.
Thats all I was talking about. I don't know how it is at other airlines but we have belts on the side of the jetways to bring them up there to us then we line them up. You have to bend over to pick them off off the belt but then all you do is line them in the jetway, no big deal right? And I'm a gate agent, might go ops or supervisor soon I don't know. But I wasn't talking about checked luggage in the pit, all I ever said was carry-ons, which you just said yourself is no big deal.

I yi yi man.

Tossing bags out on the ramp and into the cargo bin of an aircraft vs. lining bags up in the jetway.

Is that where this discussion has headed? Since you can't agrue that we all should be doing someone else's job for free out on the ramp, you now think we're saying we won't line bags up in the jetway?

If there was time, plane was preflighted, FMS programed, crews briefed, departure brief taken care of, new ATIS received, and we're just waiting for the passengers. . .and they are tossing their bags down outside the plane in an unorganized manner . . . then yes, for the sake of the rampers getting the bags quicker I had no problem lining up the bags in an organized manner so that the robots coming on the plane notice the organization and continue to follow it.

re: 121 pilots throw bags or no? (and some Allegiant stuff)

When did I say pilots should be tossing checked bags? You guys keep talking about the ramp. All I was talking about was helping with carryons in the jetway if you have time to kill.

Wonderful.

Others, of which yours got mixed in with, stated that those of us not jumping up and down on the ramp to toss bags are unworthy.

Seems two different scenarios, one of which I'm not against the other I most certainly am. Call me whatever you want (by those who like to call people names and such), but I'm not going to do someone else's job out on the ramp because my respective company can not properly staff said ramp.

re: 121 pilots throw bags or no? (and some Allegiant stuff)

:yeahthat: I've never touched a checked bag and probably never will. Personally I don't think anyone should, a lot of complicated stuff goes on down there. People who are suggesting pilots should go and throw bags on a belt loader obviously don't know half of what really goes on down there.

re: 121 pilots throw bags or no? (and some Allegiant stuff)

Funny how most of those working in the industry, with the most to lose, are saying one thing.....do your job; 'cause you're not covered to do anyone elses! Then, on the other hand, there are the noobish-types (I use that term with the utmost respect) calling the veterans out.

Hmmm, who to listen to, who to listen to??? Tough one, isn't it? :insane:

re: 121 pilots throw bags or no? (and some Allegiant stuff)

I don't know, I was planning on loading bags next week and telling the captain that a freshly-minted private pilot said I was lazy if I didn't do so! :) :sarcasm:

"Where's Doug?"

"He's out loading bags!"

"Aroo?! He's supposed to be programming the flight plan!"

"Well sir, some private pilot on the internet said that he would be thought of as lazy if he didn't load the bags!"

"Alright, well, let's bring the gate agent down to program the FMS then. Call dispatch and have the lady in the Crown Room to board the aircraft in her absence!"

Man, I knew you Suthernjets guys were a bunch of sky-nazis!!! This just confirms my suspicions. When are you sending the lesser employees to the showers??? Oh wait, nevermind, of course you need them to do your dirty work.....you know, the stuff that's beneath you.

:laff: Of course the above is :sarcasm:

At least they are getting paid and not paying to sit in that seat.

I wonder if they make up the dollars per hour in saved union fee's?

Dollars "saved" in union fee's (ALPA is 1.95%) is negligible when compared to the protections of a contract and union. Think of it as job insurance with a lawyer on retainer.

Most professional pilots who worked their way up through FBO's or fly-by-night cargo outfits have heard of or flown for someone who said "Either fly it or pack your bags." Don't like flying with a certain maintenance problem or into a dark and stormy night with weather radar out? Too bad. Get to work or pack your bags.

I was from a military family and military myself, so this union thing was new to me. Yes, it has a downside, but the upsides are well worth it considering it's my butt and livelihood on the line. FWIW.

Regarding Allegiant. They pay is on the bottom end of the pay scale for that size of aircraft. Compare them to Midwest's old payscale or even Aloha's on airlinepilotcentral.com and you'll see what I mean. Is this bad? It's a job. If that is all they value themselves, it's their choice. Given the state of the industry, Allegiant will be the lifetime career for many of those pilots. At some point I expect they'll fight for better pay....but not this decade or maybe even the next.
