Foreign maybe? I've seen Emirates crews walking through the terminal dressed to the nines with a full beard. The definition of what constitutes professional attire has changed drastically everywhere but here and a few other professions. Take that for whatever it's worth. Appearance is a facet of professionalism but it isn't the entire diamond.
Personally I doubt the paying customer cares whether or not you're carrying a backpack if you got them there on time, or if you didn't get there on time you handled the situation well.
I saw someone walking through SFO today with a full on lumberjack beard, but I didn't get a look at who he worked for.
He sure was rockin' that beard though...

Hah, we had a few people in my class that carried those packs and got asked "Oh, you were in the military?" "No...."@JetDoc
On occasion you may see me toting a tan backpack through the terminal.
If you had enough fortitude to ask me why such a putrid color, I would tell you I'm commuting to drill. You know the military obligatory service as a Guard/Reserve pilot.
Or you could passive aggressively take a picture (In a security line no less) and post it to an anonymous forum.
Come on gents, if you have a question about something you see that you feel isn't right, ask.
It's amazing how many Fortune 500 chiefs dressed up for an important meeting is putting on a sport coat with slacks. I very rarely see any executives with a tie now.The definition of what constitutes professional attire has changed drastically everywhere but here and a few other professions

When I started at McDonnell-Douglas it was Shirt, Slacks and Tie in the office, Suit if we had customers or execs in.
Then came the strike in 1996 and we were pulled to man the production line, so ties went away, and never came back post strike
Then came casual Fridays and I saw engineers in spandex bike shorts.....ugh
Here casual Fridays are lots of engineering types in Dora (no kidding), Sheldon, Atari, and Pac Man t-shirts. Thankfully I rarely have customers in the building on Fridays!
Why are you commuting to drill in uniform?@JetDoc

Right. But your post implied you are toting it in uniform through the airport...if you aren't in uniform who cares what color your backpack is...it could be hot pink
To quote @z987k "how do you know who the captain is if he doesn't have a beard?"Foreign maybe? I've seen Emirates crews walking through the terminal dressed to the nines with a full beard.
