Not surprised. We had a pax forget their inflatable pillow on a flight from Sacramento once. I got a call at my gate from the TSA checkpoint about 30 minutes later that the passenger demanded that I bring the pillow to the checkpoint or she'll sue. I tell TSA "Well, the plane is on its way to Medford now, she can wait for it to get back about 2 hours from now if she wants". Guess what, she did.
I do know a pilot who checked his kiteboard on a flight from Costa Rica, then apparently the airline lost it, then he found it on eBay about a week later.
Turns out that the person selling it on eBay had a number of items "found" on sale at eBay. I think it led to an arrest for fencing.
