Wow! Let's do what we used to do and call it new!

Re: Wow! Let\'s do what we used to do and call it new!

ya know, all this complaining about long security lines, I haven't really seen it to be real honest. When we flew from Detroit to SLC for the ski trip, we waited in detroit for like 5 mins. In SLC we waited even less than that. I would love to see them allow non ticketed passangers at the gates again. I hate comeing home from somewhere and not having anyone there to greet me until i get down to baggage, and then i ahve to try and find them in the middle of a mess. Also, with friends/relatives I don't get to see too much, the extra 45mins by the gate would be nice to just hang out together. I almost missed my plane once because we couldn't hang out by the gate so instead we were out by some cafe outside of security (in SFO) (also didn't have any line there either) but when i realized that it was time to go, i got to my gate and they were already on the last group of boarding. If i had been able to sit with my friend at the gate, this wouldnt have been such a big deal.

just my opinion

I don't see why everyone makes a big fuss about not being able to greet their friends or family the second they step off the plane. Before September 11, the last time I had someone do that was when I was a sophomore in college. How long has that been? Well, it was a jet flight from CMI on Piedmont!

I always smirked a little pre-September 11 when people were there waving like crazy people when Joe came out of the Jetway. I always thought it was kind of funny.

But I won't think it's funny if it means that I have to wait for hours to clear the lines because someone has 20 people rushing to wave at him.

Re: Wow! Let\'s do what we used to do and call it new!

I have yet to read a post on this subject that really hits what I think is the reason for this change. Economics. In Most airports the vendors (i.e. Pubs, Restaurants, gift shops) are all (or mostly all) out on the concourse. The ‘post’ 9-11 rules have put the squeeze on these businesses in a huge way. If there are six people there waiting at the gate to meet little Johnny (or Buffy) when he/she comes home from College, or Boot camp or whatever, perhaps they’ll have a meal while waiting, or at least a beverage of some type. Take all of the ‘greeters’ out of the equation and you’ve really put the hurt on these businesses. And I believe that it’s been killing these small business people. They have suffered financially to a point where they are demanding relief.

I miss going all the way out to the A/C for many reasons, my parents are getting up there in age, and I feel like a cad making my mom with her hip troubles escort my blind father through an airport. I feel helpless as I watch them pass through security (and the part of me that will always be their child longs for that one more minute with them). And I miss the thrill of getting that first glimpse of my son or daughter returning from what to them was an adventure, but now they’re back home with daddy.

I do however, think the TSA needs to improve the screening process, and offer some expedited way for ticked pax only and crew. TSA hasn’t won many friends within the traveling public (understatement intentional), but they do have a difficult job to do. Security is not a tangible thing (at least not the kid of security American’s want), Security is 90% perception. Real Security wouldn’t be tolerated well in this country.

Re: Wow! Let\'s do what we used to do and call it new!

I have to blame the long lines at MCO on the lack of organization of TSA. Let's face it, they weren't that long when Argenbreit was there (damn, did I just say that?). Some days I have trouble getting through, and I WORK there. I bypass the main line with my ID badge, but TSA changes the rules on a daily basis. Some days we can zip through the selectee line no problem, other days it's like we committed a felony even trying that. Some days there is an employee line, other days that employee line is for employees, mom and dad with their six kids and twelve strollers, and grandma in her wheelchair. A couple of other days it's mass hysteria just trying to get TO a screener station. It's like this whether it's slow or busy. In fact, the line moves FASTER when it's busy. I guess it's because they know they have to get a lot of people through in a short amount of time. Mix that with the unprofessional attitude of a lot of screeners, and I can understand why people would rather drive. I swear I had a person stare at my bag on the x-ray machine for a full minutes and a half. All I had in there was my keys, cel phone, a couple of books, and a frozen dinner. Other than the frozen dinner, I'm sure EVERY other bag that when through before and after mine had pretty much the same thing.

Well take it from me, They can get really long.

Donttouchanything, Yes I am sure economics plays a part. But there are more stores and restaurants outside of security then you think, and as airports remodel they are/and can take this in consideration.

I for one am not ready to let my/our guard down, this is what they are waiting for and knew would happen b/c thats how we act. Allowing more people into the "screened" area will do one or more of these things...

1. Cost more money to employ more TSA employees
2. Slow the boarding process
3. Make TSA "expedite" boarding processes which is unsafe

Also remember that airline compete alot with the car. If lines get longer the justification for flying gets less.

Have you guys seen how many people are waiting for their people to get off the plane? THere is more than you think. Coming out of Montreal I felt like i was a Rock star about to get mobed as there were people EVERYWHERE waiting just outside customs/security.

Well, let's not forget that pre-September 11, all you had to do is put your bag on the x-ray machine, and walk through the metal detector.

Now they check your ID, make sure you have a boarding pass, look closely at the bags, check your shoes, and so on.

You can't really blame the TSA for being slower than the old system when you ask for so many things to be added to the process.

i agree with you 100% tonyw not for nothing despite all the negativity the TSA receives whether it be a screener putting himself through the x-ray machine or just being plain nasty i happen to think that they are doing a pretty good job, not a single problem THAT HAS BEEN MADE PUBLIC since 9-11
im more than happy to take my shoes off and let everyone smell my feet. it makes me feel safer and more confident in what they are doing.

just my $.02

Re: Wow! Let\'s do what we used to do and call it new!

Well, while I'm willing to be fair to the TSA and say they're slower because of all the stuff that we have asked them to do, I also think that very little of it makes us any safer.

And it's a good thing the Richard Reid didn't put the C4 up his butt, because if he did...
