Working in aviation when you need certain days off for religious observances

It only gives you an extra 0.02%. And everyone at the table hates your guts. Not worth it. :)

They only hate your guts if you're standing there yelling "C'mon House!! Lets go!!!"

Otherwise place your chips quietly..... :D

Solid advice.

Plus 40x the minimum odds or don't bother.

Know when you've had enough because it ain't coming back.

Know when you're making money, it might be your peak before it statistically starts the trend back down.

Your big win may be $5 for the night, it may be $2000-plus. This is the hard part.

Throw the odds out there, trust the math or don't play.

And never forget the old adage: "If you try to beat the odds, be sure you can survive the odds beating you"

Tactically, your best bet, in my limited airline experience, is to use your vacation to bid for the week/days you need off, and hope that your religion is small enough within the area you work that not many other people need those days.

Then as your second choice, bid any holiday weekend in the country you are working (so for USA, 4th of July/Memorial Day etc) then trade with someone from a different religion. If you're senior enough, bid for a major holiday (Christmas/Thanksgiving for example) and that will be easy to trade.

Your last resort is if you are assigned to work on those days, put that trip in open time and pay someone to pick it up. There's always someone who could use the money.

Your last last resort is to call in unavailable. Some airlines allow a certain number of absences for personal reasons each year.
