Why are TSA employees so dang rude!?

Q: Why are they so rude?
A: When you mix: zero intelligence, a sense of superiority, and a shiny uniform with a badge, you get a nasty combination that is...The TSA.

Wait till you go through Tel Aviv, if you haven't already. Sharp people simply asking twenty questions (or more like ten questions)...best screening in the world. You have to experience it to believe it.

OOhh yes! Got grilled both on the way in and on the way out - by customs and security screening. It was thorough but appropriate, and the biggest difference was making eye contact and seeing more than a blank zombie-like stare.

Toothpaste Stealing A-holes!!!

Just wait until they start "poking fun" at you in front of almost all of your passengers questioning if you're "old enough to be a pilot"

F the TSA. F every single mouth-breather that works there. If there were more than 250 GEDs amongst the collective group, I would be SHOCKED.

/I have heard stories of college educated people being told they were overqualified for the job

Yeah i've learned my lesson about that one. Traveling to and from SIM they took a lot of my stuff, because I wasnt in uniform....guess ill be flying (commuting) in uniform from now on........

Since it's pick-on-the-TSA day, another complaint I have is how they think they have "front of the line privileges" at the concessions in JFK.

Next in line at Starbucks, up walks about five.

Grabbing a slice of pizza, three or four step right in front.

Augh!

DT, I was in ATL a few weeks ago at the Starbucks, and an agent actually pushed me aside to get to the front. Not a shove but certainly a forceful gesture. Nice replies guys, I thought I was going to get flamed for this post, but at the time I was seething. Me thinks even a letter to the supervisor won't do anything. Someone a few posts up said it best, "0 intelligence, shiny uniform with a new badge........" mix that up and you have our favorite organization.

I will second that sometimes customs gets a great chip on their shoulder....however, you REALLY don't want to piss those guys off:(

I hate to make the first post back from my brief hiatus a rant but I really can't help it and would love to have some TSA employees on the forum chime in at any time and let me know if they take a class to act the way they do. I will say I have had some polite ones and some rude ones on my travels but this experience took the cake. We transfered to LGA to take the shuttle to Boston. Anyways, my mom has these bangles (bracelets) that she never takes off for religious reasons and they always have to do a special pat down. Anyways my mom was about to step through the metal detector when she says

Mom: "I can't take these off and they usually make me beep if you'd like to do a patdown instead....

TSA guy: "Maaaaam were you born with those dang THINGS on your arm?...I suggest you take them off for reasons of national security.."

Mom: "Excuse me.."

TSA guy: "You heard me miss!"

...so I chimed in and asked if I could speak to his manager and he basically gave me the spiel if I wanted to be difficult I could take it up with a police officer in cuffs...I just let it go....I am seething as to how rude these a** holes can be sometimes! In Europe and other places in the world they do thorough security searches with a reasonable amount of professionalism and politeness! Is that too much to ask?? Hell in Israel I had a guy with an AK 47 and some REAL authority act 100 times more polite than the rent a cops they have here...sorry if i offended anybody but I have had it with the tolerated rudeness, impositions, and general lack of respect that this all hallowed organization (Homeland Security) spews....comments?

Try being an aircraft dispatcher attempting to use your flight benefits. And if you have to do your annual 5 hours jumpseating requirement in the flightdeck to keep your dispatch currency, good luck getting past the TSA and the GATE AGENT!

I've been with TSA since 2002, and seen worse. I won't lie, we have idiots working here; speaking for all the good workers here, it's embarrassing to have those types of coworkers. FYI, in a few months we'll be getting new uniforms. Word has it that there'll be a two day class to recieve new metal badges in lieu of sewn on ones. So those egos will soon be getting even bigger.

Hey! Thanks for being brave enough to post that in a sea of pilots! :)

A couple questions. Do you think it's the "They hate us, so we'll hate them right back" attitude between crewmembers and the TSA or is there something within the organizational environment that makes some (not all) TSA workers go above and beyond?

They always take my toothpaste! I must have some suspicious looking toothpaste!

The VP of my company and I are working on a project together today and we're sitting here eating pizza and talking about the TSA. He has the Clear Pass and never has any hassles. Are crew members allowed to buy one of those?

hey i'm with tsa too and i donmt hate hate any pilot duh i going to school to become one, but sometimes we have pilots that get mad if we tell them to removed a belt or anything, , and its true we are surrounded by alot of fools, i always treat ppl they way i would like to be trate it even if they gave an attitude at the end i always say " have a safe trip home" sorry for my grammar not so good

Do the good workers find 40% of the bombs instead of 30%?

Honestly the rude agents seem to be rare for me, and I whiz through in uniform. It's the fact that the system is ridiculous, half assed, and designed in a way which can never be successful that gets me.

$2.4 billion/year and the only thing keeping us safe is the terrorists rarely try.

Thousands Standing Around Experience: The FO in front of me had her stolen. I watched her put it in the tub with the other stuff, did my thing, and with a short distraction of the TSA goon having to double-check our badges, the hat was gone and "nobody saw anything".

Who wants to take a delay to fill out a police report?

I'm thinking of designing an alarm system whereas if someone doesn't press the right section on the laptop when taking it out of the tub, 300DB lets the world know, maybe "Die infidel!" might get more attention, although I doubt the laptop would survive the subsequent melee. :panic:

I personally have had all friendly TSA agents. They smile, say hi, have a good day. Maybe its just a Pacific NW thing.:) In fact, the TSA agents in Spokane didnt even take the sharp tool steel out of my bag. It did take them a few minutes to figure out that the round object in my bag was a flywheel though.

I like travelling out of smaller airports. Makes the whole experience a whole lot more enjoyable.

Hey guys, as some of you know I'm a fellow TSA employee; since 2003. As some of my coworkers here said, TSA has a lot of fools running around; I really wished they improved the hiring selection. In regards to what happened at LGA, all of that was uncalled for. For me working at JFK in the IAT, I see bangles all day; it's one of those come through the mag and if they alarm send them to be wanded. But not to talk for all passengers like a lot of people talk for TSA, some of them are real fools also. Me personally it takes a lot to get me off, but when I have somebody put me in a category as being just another uneducated TSA employee; then we might have a problem. I didn't bust my butt for all the years going to college full-time and part-time to get an engineering degree, and going to grad school for another engineering degree. I'm not going to have anybody belittle me because they don't know my struggle, education background, my walk of life, and having to put up with all the crap I deal with because I work for TSA. Now I'm not going to blow up in your face because that's not me, but if a passenger is interested, I'll gladly tell them my background. I've done that before, and got a lot of apologies from people for just coming out their faces and being ignorant. (Disclaimer: None of this is directed to you Chris_Ford or anybody else from here on in who makes comments about lack of education and TSA workers :)). I just think that it's very unfair to categorize and entire agency just because of the disdain you have for it and the bad encounters you may have had passing through the checkpoint. Sorry for ranting, but this really grinds my gears.

Trust me, we're going to see a lot of power tripping when this happens. They had a big supervisor and operations "meeting"; more like a symposium to me, and one of my sup's told me by Nov. we should be wearing the blues....I'm just waiting to see if that'll be pushed back like everything else. I for one am against the new uniforms, I think it's ugly and unnecessary. The metal badge, they can keep it; save the hassle of people trying to be something they're not outside of the airport. I wish the uniforms were the same blue like our jackets and pants all around, but I heard Customs didn't want that.

In my opinion there is no "they hate us, let's hate them" mentality; actually, I think kmiller is on the right track. I think it is more of a "lack of respect" issue from flight crews and passengers. By the way, kmiller, I'm not looking forward to looking like some bellhop either. If anyone has not seen the uniform think JetBlue flight attendant with blue piping down the leg. Horrendous. Hopefully I'll be ATC by the time the first dumb TSO is arrested for impersonating an officer.
