Ran across this link a few minutes ago while looking at other, unrelated airplane porn.
Looks like dad was right, it's the gun ports.

Maybe on the Mustang and possibly a contributing factor on the Corsair, but how do you explain that every Corsair makes that distinctive sound?

That and people closely associated with Vought Aircraft and the Corsair (including the lead test pilot Boone Guyton) point to the wing root air intakes as the source of the highly distinctive whistle of the Corsair.

....and that there are Mustangs in the past that were doing airshow aerobatics with the gun ports fared over (e.g. N51RH) that also had the whistle....
