Whip out your....................flight schedule

Since joining this board a week ago, I've noticed lots of people are considering this profession, and want to know what life is really like for pilots.

So pro pilots.....why not whip it out! Your schedule of course.

I am really interested to see how schedules compare between major, regional, corporate and military pilots.

I'll go first:

This will look confusing but I will translate how this works out at the bottom of this post.

9.50BL
9.50TL

Total trip time paid = 35.20 hrs
TAFB [time away from base] 119.45 hrs

The way this works, [had I flown it] would be:

Wake up early on the 29th of Jan, commute from DFW to ATL. Hope there are empty seats on Delta, AA or Airtan so I can get a flight to work. Report for duty at 17:55 local time.

Fly 8:20 total from Atlanta to London Gatwick. Attempt to sleep on 2:23 rest break during cruise. Big fat F/A keeps bumping me, so no sleep. Land in LGW at 8:45am local time which is 2:45am body clock time for me. This assumes no London fog and subsequent holding.

Arrive LGW, clear customs, go to hotel, take power nap for about 3 hours, wake up, wander into village of Crawley [I call it "Creepy Crawley",] stop at guitar store and say hi - play with guitars, go to a pub, drink fine English ales. Go back to hotel, meet crew, have dinner, hang out in crew room, possibly sing a few songs, go to bed.

Wake up at 8:10 [body clock time of 2:10am,] eat at hotel buffet for $10, [mmmmmm bangers and mash!,] go to airport, get gate raped by British TSA. Fly 9:20 to Cincinatti. Go to crappy hotel, attempt to use rusty excercise eqp, give up, meet other 2 pilots for dinner, go to Hoffbrau House, eat lots of food, get fat. Sleep.

Wake up next day. Wonder, "what the hell am I going to do in CVG all day?" Go to Sunrise Cafe, order a sausage called "getta." Mope around. Report to plane late afternoon.

Back to England. You know how that goes.

Back to ATL, clear custioms, re-clear security, hope to catch a flight home to DFW. Take Super SHuttle or make wife pick me up at airport because I am way too freaking tired to drive.

Other trips in Feb:

Strafe beach at St. Maartin, then layover! Eat German food at Student Prince restaurant, Springfield, MA. Short layover in Phoenix, not enought time to raid Doug's fridge though. Have to commute in day prior due to early report. Trip starts with JAX penalty lap.

Go to Guatemala City, twice! ....but stay in crappy hotel in crappy downtown Los Angeles. Since I hate downtown LA, rent car, visit sister in Santa Clarita, get her kids all wound up right before bed time, leave. Have to commute to ATL the day prior due to early report. Scheduled deadhead LAX to ATL at end of trip. Deviate from deadhead, beg American Airlines for non-stop ride home, LAX to DFW.

Trip starts with Tampa "penalty lap." Short night in Denver at crappy hotel with lousy food. But I get a 33 hour [2 day] layover in Reno. Although I hate Reno, I love Lake Tahoe. Rent car in RNO, go skiing at Northstar on day 3, try not to break leg. Get back to Atlanta do a PBI penalty lap. Now it is kind of late, only two flights for possible commute back to DFW, hope there are seats extra left. Get last seat, in middle....former line backer to my left, sumo wrestler to my right.

Crazy Dawg...

How do you have both domestic and international trips? I thought you could only fly one or the other? Or is that just a function of base?

During the wintertime, the ATL ER category gets some domestic flying because of the scaling back of the international schedule.

Zoo York, however, all innanashnul, baby! :)

They do this in our ATL 767ER base. There have always been a handful of "domestic" trips, but nowadays, there are quite a few. Maybe 15% of the category. It is still mainly an international category though. The international guys can fly domesitc, but not the other way around.

Delta normally splits it's international and domestic 767/757 flying. It saves them money on training and Jepp manuals, etc. There are enough planes doing both types of flying so that economies of scale are still sufficient.

We [intl] are issued Jepps for Europe and South America, as well as a few domestic cities. If we get a domestic trip, we have to get loaner Jepps from the chief pilots office. [Same deal for Hawaii and Africa.]

I believe American Airlines does not split it's domesitc and international flying on their 767s.

The last Delta new hire class had most of the guys going to the NYC 767 ER category. This used to be a senior category, but our reserve system now stinks, and with pay being half of what it was from a few years ago........and with NYC being expensive......and a pain in the arse...... it goes junior.

Imagine as new hire not only having to learn a new airline and new airplane, but a really big airplane, probably your first Boeing, ocean crossing procedures, and foriegn country procedures. Add to this that you are tired from flying back side of the clock hours and operating in countries where it is often hard to understand the accents. For a new hire, going to this category is a lot to bite off, but not impossible. The company realizes this and will work with you if you need more training. A lot of guys do.

But if you fly with Doug, he'll get you up to speed!

Thats a Junior 756 schedule out of EWR. 31 day bid month, 15 days off, 3 commutes, 74:32 block, no extra credit (there never is).

Continental 757, 767-200 and 767-400 domestic and international, are all one be glob of a bud group. Dad is starting a 4 day domestic trip tomorrow, layovers in FLL, MCO and LAX. EWR is 85% international flying and IAH is 85 % domestic flying

I like that idea of being able to do domestic every once in a while. At least you get to land them plane more then twice a month.

Here is mine for January....

sked.jpg

A few items...

- I am on reserve, and did not break guarantee this month (although I should have with all that flying at the beginning) - so I get 75 hours of pay instead of about 90+ had I broken guarantee
- Got stuck in Missouri one night with the tornadoes and had to work on a day off (got compensated though)
- 10 days scheduled off (reserve standard here)

Here is an example of a nice paying 3 day trip...

(employee # and hotel info removed :) )

On reserve in CVG.

Off Mon, Tue, Wed all month...

4am till 4pm reserve. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I actually got THREE landings in last month.

Two smooth ones and one where I thought I left the other pilots with a bad first impression.

It all started out when I hand-flew the departure out of LGW... ;)

Reserves typically don't like it.

International Short-Call is 24 hrs, but there aren't many call-outs (and those are usually in the afternoon).

Domestic Short-Call is only 12 hrs, but there can be many of them because of the Domestic 76/75 Category. There are many rules regarding priority, but having more published trips in the International Category increases the probability of being called-out.

That's all I know. During a rotation, we rarely know when we wake up where we'll end up that night and I love that. Variety is the spice of life! :D

Unlike all my previous jobs, my days off are OFF with no exceptions. Home reserve is nice because basically it means they don't need me and I get to stay at home until they do. It's nothing you bid for, they just assign it as needed, but it's a pleasant surprise when it turns a 6-day rotation into a 2-day. :)

I believe American Airlines does not split it's domesitc and international flying on their 767s.

AA's 75/76 DOM and INTL operations are entirely split. So much so that on the F/A side, a base city can have two separate "bases". If a F/A is international Chicago, his/her base is IOR, if they're domestic, it's ORD (IDF, DFW, etc). Completely different bases, same city. Only under very critical circumstances can an INTL F/A do a domestic trip, and that's only if their DOM qualifications haven't lapsed. Never can a DOM F/A at AA do an INTL trip.

Mine has been pretty light this month and last. I had two of my 9 weeks of vacation during the nd of January. For your info an 'O' is a day that we could be extended, 'A' days are a long call reserve (no reserve pilots here, we all share it), 'G' days are days off, 'L' is leave, and the duties that begin with a B are recurrent sims with a medical thrown in for good measure.

I tried everything to get it to format and fit in the post but I couldn't. Here it is as a PDF.
