WHICH ONE!?!

Hey guys and gals,

I have the fortunate problem of a job offer from both Comair and SkyWest. SkyWest has offered the CRJ so the equipment is equal. Which airline do I choose? I need to choose quickly classes start in a week and three weeks respectively.

I have my own pros and cons of each....which would you all choose? Who is going to be doing the best in three years?

Later....help!!

Seriously though, that is a dilemma many of us would love to have. Is there any chance of finding out a domicile before you leave.? Probably not. I guess I would go with the one that will more than likely make for a better commute/QOL. I know there are several Skywest pilots on here that reall enjoy where they are. As for Comair, I don't recall. Let us know how it works out.

BTW, once they make a job offer, how long will they wait for an answer?

Congrats......

I'm a mere private pilot, but if it were me I guess I'd choose the one with either better pay or a better base. Also, do you have a sense of which company treats its employees better?

Skywest.

Comair just took a pay freeze and at SkyWest you usually get a quarterly bonus.

Skywest in three years will be SkyWestEastNorthSouth. I think you'd be much better off at Skywest with their growth and pay scale.

I'd be careful speculating on what ANY airline is going to be in 3 years.

I would go for the one with bases you like. Actually, I would go for Comair. Screw SkyWest for not paying or putting you in a hotel for training- that's crap.

Skywest definetly. From how people talk around here, better work rules and they'll be expanding. Comair guys just took pay concessions for growth. WTF is that when you're a regional airline?

I don't think ESF has his facts straight. Unless something's changed recently, here's what the two cover/don't cover:

SkyWest: no pay during training, does cover your hotel.
Comair: pays min guarantee during training, doesn't cover hotel or pay per-diem.

So the answer to "which one"? is probably best answered by where you want to live, and how important a faster upgrade is to you. Comair is mostly east coast, SkyWest mostly west coast; SkyWest has the quicker upgrade on the CRJ, Comair pays better.

Wouldn't be the first time. Sorry about that.

I'll keep my trap shut now, except to say that it might not be wise to pick an airline based on upgrade times, IMO.

I'll keep out of the regional discussions I guess.

I'd got with Skywest, assuming you like the bases and it's easy to either commute or move there. Here's why: Who knows what's going on with Comair. With Delta in financial trouble, the odds of Comair being auctioned off are pretty good. Once that happens, who knows. Delta might say "Well, we've got these mainline routes that are costing us money, and CHQ has these EMB-170s and no scope restrictions....." Growth at Skywest is probably better since they fly for a couple of different airlines. Movement is faster over there than Comair, so if you're goal is the majors or something better than a regional, the odds of getting upgraded faster are better at Skywest. The down side is the lack of pay during training......

Tough decision. Both are good companies. I'd go with SkyWest. Comair has all their eggs in one basket working solely for Delta. SkyWest is also working for United. SkyWest has A LOT of money in the bank and a really good credit rating. I've heard Jerry Atkin is buddies with the CEO of a major aircraft leasing company. If United, Delta or both went under, I think SkyWest could go out on their own. SkyWest just got awarded 20 more CRJ-700's from United, so their is still quite a bit of growth planned. SkyWest has many many more bases so there's a good chance you'll get based where you like. We get flight benefits with United and Delta.

I just interviewed with Comair on April 6th.

Aloft- Comair doesn't pay guarantee during training. They pay $240 per week and pick up the first 7 days of hotel expenses. No per diem.

The pay freeze won't affect new hires. The pay freeze ends 2 years from this June. So by the time the new hires hit 2 years, the pay freeze will be over and they'll just go on with third year pay.

I had a class date with Comair, but turned it down for a pilot position in a local flight department. However, I think Comair would have been an excellent company to work for. I have some friends who fly there and they love it.

Best of luck!

Chris

Assuming the status quo sticks around. If Comair gets put on the auction block, all bets are off. We've seen how much airline management honor agreements when it comes to money just by looking at United and US Air. Another thing to consider is if Delta goes into bankruptcy, you can bet ASA and Comair are gonna come out like redheaded stepchildren compared to DAL mainline.

Comair is still a good regional to work for, however it's future is a little too shaky for my tastes.

But remember, SkyWest's future is tied to a bankrupt "go with the lowest bidder" United (look what happened to Air Wisconsin!), and a possibly-bankrupt Delta. If Delta goes into bankrupcy, then SkyWest will be tied to two bankrupt carriers. They just recently lost the Continental codeshare in IAH.

As for them going at it alone, good luck. Look at Independence Air. But that pretty much goes for all regionals if they lose the codeshare, including Delta.

Yes, the Comair pay freeze sucks hard. But they still are coming out on top in pay and work rules. Also, they are union. I never liked unions, until now that I work under one. Also I think a positive is that they are wholly owned by Delta, as is ASA. In my opinion they could get sold off, but still continue to codeshare for Delta, just like happened here at XJT. But who knows what the future holds, anywhere.

SkyWest is a good company. I have friends there, and some great guys like Ophir and JDFlight have gotten hired there recently. There are a few things that I dislike about SkyWest though, like their 50/70 seat joint payscale, lack of a union, and no pay in training. I also really didn't take kindly to the comments made after they lost the CAL codeshare, how they'd "like to do business with CAL in 2007" which happens to be when our capacity purchase agreement is up at XJT with CAL. I KNOW Mesa, CHQ and SkyWest are armed and ready to try and swoop in and under-bid us.

Good luck to whatever you choose! I think your decision should be based on your personal desires and needs rather than politics or anyone else's opinion of a company. In 5 years everything could be drastically different, so you never know if a decision will be a good one. Go with what feels right.

I would say Comair because the SkyWest F/A's are Morman

Just kidding.... Have you ever been to OHIO!??! It is the arm pit of the USA. If you want to live in Cincinasty, then go for Comair.... if you want to get on with a growing regional with good bases, and from what I hear on here a high QOL then go with SkyWest!

Huh? As opposed to all-its-eggs-in-one-basket Comair???

And as someone who's hit his fair share of Mormon chicks (including one BYU co-ed

)--yes, they do. Especially the ones who look like that. We call them Jack-Mormons, and there are plenty of them out there. Even Michelle has copped to her days as an LDS wild-child. They do exist. And most of them are hot.
