Where's Doug Been?

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

A few words to the wise, Aussies have livers the size of Volkswagens -- do not, I repeat, do NOT take drink recommendations from our bretheren from down under! Especially when it's one guy and four women, and one of the women is 6"2'!

[/ QUOTE ]

Funniest thing about Aussies is that their money is relatively weak compared to our money but they are more than willing to buy lots of liquor for you! Of course, that's because they're drinking so much themselves that your couple doesn't really matter, but still.

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

I'm jealous, Doug. It sounds like a great trip.

Alaska is high on my list of places to go.

Happy anniversary to you and the missus.

Thanks!

7 day outside stateroom on the Holland America "Ryndam" on the "Glacier Discovery/Inside Passage" cruise, all inclusive (tips and port charges included) was about $400/person with an interline discount from itstimetocruise-interline.com!

Highly suggested!

Man, if I didn't have roots established, I'd be up in AK flying floatplanes in a heartbeat.

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

Not bad, of course, with a pay cut looming it may have to wait a while.

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

hey Doug,
Sounds like you had a grea time. I spent a week in Alaska this summer and it is absoltuley awesome. I was in Seward. Did you get to do any fishing there?

Nah, we disembarked in Seward and took a 3 hour bus tour to ANC where we hopped on Alaska Airlines to SEA.

I'm just amazed at the number of people who are looking to build flight time that haven't considered running up to AK. The area, albeit challenging, is so gorgeous and there are float and cargo planes EVERYWHERE, I'd be up there in a heartbeat.

So... did were you brave enough to try Vegemite??

[/ QUOTE ]

not yet - but we did find it in the grocery store yesterday... and when we decide to go out drinking again - we'll try it!

the advice we were given was:
buhuh, vegemite, buhuh and eat it really fast! hahaha

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

Awesome! My wife and I hope to take an Alaskan cruise in the next year or so. So, it's true about the "eat, drink, eat, eat, eat, drink" thing, huh?

BUT FIRST -

We leave in 12 days - count `em - 12 days for our Bahaman cruise!!!

That is.... after my IR ride.

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

Clearly your photo was taken on the first day of the trip, then, what with all the "eat, drink, eat eat eat, drink"ing going on after that!

Having tried Vegimite, I highly recommend eating straight molasses first. At least it will dull the horrific taste.

Hey, Doug. Would you by any chance recommend trying to build time in Alaska? Actually, now you've got me thinking more about it.

I really don't know a lot about the inner workings of AK flying, but I noticed the place is a hotbed of aviation during the 'thaw' months.

Check out flyalaska.com and there might be some info to glean there.

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

I did the exact same trip for my honeymoon back in August. Except we embarked from Seward and debarked in Van. Highly recommend it to everyone. Most fun part was a helicopter/dog sled adventure offered in Juneau. Aboslutely amazing vistas from a helo. Recommend this as well.

Did you go to the "Red Dog" in Juneau? What a tourist trap. I like how one of the cruise people said, "Yeah, that's their third 'original' location".

Hubbard Glacier was amazing -- I just wish I could have captured the sound of the ice breaking off of the glacier.

Seriously, the wife and I walked in and did a complete 180 turn and left the place. We ate up the road a bit at a local Italian joint. Great pizza. I am definitely going to go back, but I am not sure I will take a cruise. As for the bald eagle sightings, my wife ran out of film while we were sea kayaking in Ketchikan (sp?) trying to get a pic of every single bald eagle she saw. It was quite humerous.

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

Hi Doug, Buzo, and anyone who can offer advice:
I am a private pilot with 170 hours, 27 years old, and going to AK next month to do my floatplane rating. For a few months I have been thinking about heading up there to build hours and have fun, specifically bush flying. I read jetcareers 3-4 times a day and after a weekend haitus, it was interesting that this post came up. Questions:

1.) What are the minimum papers/hours necessary to hit the road(glaciers?) and find a job up there? If I get my comm/inst right now I'll have 300 hours. Enough? Doug, in this case would you recommend taking out a loan for the comm/inst? I know you are anti-debt with flight training(rightfully so) but this situation is different.

2.) Does this type of flying make you a better pilot? I believe Bush pilots must have the best S&R skills in the world, but what about my IFR skills? Would I have to relearn? My instructor(Long Island, NY), after I asked his opinion on AK flying, laughed at me and told me some IFR pilot from AK flew with him and couldn't maintain altitude.

3.) Would airlines look favorably on this type of time?

Thanks for the help!!

Louie

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

I dunno Louie, I'm pretty much just a epaulet-shirt, tie-wearing airline geek. I don't know the first thing about flying in AK!

We walked in, ordered some crab cakes, two beers and that alone was $30.... And the beer wasn't even that great because it was nothing other than the Alaskan Brewing company with a "vanity" label for Red Dog Saloon.

We went around the corner a few blocks to the Imperial and some other place I can't remember. I think the reason I can't remember the other place is because we ran into "The Aussies" (tm).

I never thought I'd say it, but I've seen enough bald eagles during the trip that I could care less if I ever saw one again. I think I saw more B.E.'s than were Ravens in AK. Besides, the raven is much more reveled in those parts anyhoo.

Nevermore!

Re: Where\'s Doug Been?

Thanks Doug, the fact that you would go up there yourself if you were in my shoes helped to clarify things for me.
