Wheels Up

Hey guys, any latest and greatest?@skydisaster
Talked to a couple of WU pilots the other day. They said the word on the schedule is the 6/3 is here to stay. Any insight? I've read on the forums people heard they were working on making the schedule better...
Cheers

The way I understand it, middle management, i.e. the guys responsible for the day to day operations of WU want a better schedule. Upper management at Gama says no. Current employees might have better info than I do, but that is what I have heard.

I heard they were talking about doubling it to 12/6 which is also insane, but there you go...

They tried 12/6 with some new hires, everyone is going back to 6/3 by May. I was on a 12/6 schedule until recently, and it sucked major donkey balls. I'm now on a 12/8 sched, which sucks a little less.

We have been resoundingly told that the 6/3 is here to stay. The attrition rate is accelerating rapidly because of it. NetJets, JetBlue, and others are starting to pick off our pilots. At some point the attrition rate will force the hand of upper management to fix the schedule. They are already gradually adding more bases (BWI/IAD and ATL just opened as satellite bases just for the purpose of trying to get pilots in the door. If you have a pulse, meet the mins, and are willing to "live" within 2 hours of DAL, VNY, TEB, BWI, or ATL, Gama will hire you.

Hell I've heard if your willing to live within 5 hours they will hire you. I know 2 guys who each make about a 4 hour drive to work. But both are probably outta there soon because the schedule is just too brutal. They have to do something about that if they want to retain pilots. I also heard they recently decided they would let guys on the 350 bid over to the Excel? Can anyone confirm that? I think a 12/8 schedule would be doable. No way would I ever go for a 6/3 or a 12/6.

They need to get with reality. They banked on a recession to gain marketshare and they have some traction, but they aren't taking marketshare from the top charter/fractional companies. The pay is a good number, until you look at the amount of time you have to work for it. Is it worth the QOL sacrifice? The company needs to go home based, and create a more realistic schedule. Fleet locking, 6/3 schedule and having to live near base are huge downsides to Wheels Up in this current market/economy/industry.

They published a transition plan once the Excel was fully (over)staffed. That was a couple months ago. I don't think anyone has moved, and it'll probably be a while. It does seem they have stopped hiring captains so they can upgrade the qualified FOs already waiting. Schedule is the subject of much rumormaking, don't believe anyone saying it will change prior to it actually changing.

Hi skydisaster!

By the sound of it, you must be an insider! Do you mind sparing some info?

I am interested in a VNY-position, currently flying the B200 as PIC. I have 2100TT and 1500 on the 200, 300 PIC-on-type single-pilot and the remaining are 2-crew-ops on the Proline21 a/c as FO. I have my FAA ATP theory completed and I am looking at getting the checkride out the way next time stateside. It gets better: I have worked nearly 5 year with Gama in UK but lately I did not get along well with the CP so I moved on. Not sure who does what but am I right if I say these are two separate companies, ruled by two separate hiring departments?

Thanks in advance for your hints!

Gama Aviation is very much a subsidiary of Gama UK. Hiring is done by U.S. management, but I can't tell you if your recent departure from Gama UK will be an issue.

PS. I am no longer an insider as I have moved on.

Thanks for your reply. Good that u moved on, hopefully for the better.

I am aware of the power-levels within the group, so not expecting Gama Inc. to be an entirely separate entity. I should have made myself clearer: I left the UK arm back in 2012 and worked with other company before joining my present operation. It's more to understand how much weight having worked for Gama would carry if you want to join this "new" venture with its separate hiring board.

Then there is the experience's question: OK the 350 is a separate rating and their figures are pretty clear. However once someone carries a reasonably high experience on a (almost) identical type, in what measure can those figures be amended? Any known-case?

Safe flying!

All that I can tell you is to apply and see. They are short staffed right now.
