whats your favorite airplane movie

The best flying in a movie has got to be the awesome flying scenes in 'Fandango', an old Kevin Costner flick.

Bloody hilarious.
"Hey is everything cool dude? Look, if it'll make you feel better I'll take a chute up and jump first so's you can watch how it's done.....Oh ho! Oh ho ho! Ohhh ho ho ho, oh God! Well I can't do that. If I do that, who's gonna land the plane? Oh dear!."

This is crazy two pages of replies and not one mention of "View From the Top"!!!! You've all lost your freakin minds.

Ah yes, Truman Sparks.

"Like the plane? It's pretty fast because of the stripe. I painted it myself."

That was a good one. Waldo Pepper, Always, Strategic Air Command are some other great choices. All the Ernest Gann adaptations except (sadly) Fate is the Hunter.
And of course, Fandango, a nostalgic romp for anyone that ever jumped with a bunch of stoners in the 70s.

One that has been missed is Cliffhanger. The in flight transfer of a person from a DC-9 to a Jetstar is one of the greatest stunts ever attempted. I say attempted because they actually got the stuntman inside the Jetstar before he was jerked back outside by the cable. He then released, slid along the top of the Jetstar and fell off the back, parachuting into the Rocky Mountains over which they were shooting the event.

There will never be a stunt that great done again, at least for a movie. From here on out it will be effects (ala Air Force One). So that movie deserves a special place in aviation lore.

I believe a similiar stunt was done for Airport '75, with the HH-53 helo and the 747...the pilot being winched from the helo to the 747. Granted, the parts with the pilot entering the 747 from the hole in the fuselage were fake, but the actual stunt was completed with the helo and the 747 flying in formation. Also good footage of the 747 cruising through the mountains near Salt Lake City.

For some real old school, note in the last pic where the 747 is landing at Salt Lake City Intl, in teh background, you can see Utah Air National Guard KC-97s.

Another Note of trivia is that the T-37 chase plane is T-37B s/n 67-14762. '762' served for many years with the 82nd Flying Training Wing/96th Flying Training Squadron at the former Williams AFB (now Williams Gateway Airport) Arizona. In 1974, '762' participated in the filming of Airport 1975. '762' is the USAF "chase plane" that initially intercepts the striken 747 airliner to assess the damage following a mid-air collision with a Beech Baron.

Following the closure of Williams AFB in September 1993, '762' was transferred to the 47th Flying Training Wing/85th Flying Training Squadron at Laughlin AFB, Texas where yours truly has a number of hours logged in 67-14762. Neat thing was, 762 had a plaque affixed to the left side of the cockpit interior commemorating it's starring role in the film.

Hope someone saves the little instrument panel plaque in 762 that commorates her "15 minutes of fame".....

Wow! Can't believe Battle of Britain hasn't been mentioned yet. Furthermore no one has mentioned Pushing Tin, staring John Cusack, funniest flying movie ever.

Maybe I was too hasty with my classification of TopGun...

Anyone mention another of my favorites: The Blue Max?
