What's the deal with anti-Leather jackets?

It starts with the leather, then the hats become optional, then.... It's happening piece by piece. Eventually, I wouldn't be surprised to see khakis and a polo. Look at the Virgin America uniform. Look at the SkyBus uniform. They're tearing down our professional image, and some of us are going right along with it.

That's what I'm talking about. We'll see in 5-10 years. If that happens, then I'll apologize and say "You were right." However, it's paranoia right now. How do you know it's not just changing with the trends? Law makers don't wear those powdered wigs anymore either, ya know. Was that eroding their professional appearance when that got tossed aside?

Hear Hear!!! (or is it Here Here??? Never really knew :D ).

Well said.

Haven't earned it yet, but I'll give you 10 right now! Boo Yaa!

Well, I'll knock out the other ten then - for that, and because I wear jeans and a sweatshirt to fly - that certainly deserves some pushups!

Agree! I was in IAD last week and saw a crew walking in dressed in that ridiculous looking red uniform. :whatever: Personally, I'd be embarrassed to be seen in that. I'm in FA training right now and if I pass, I am going to be proud (and thrilled) to be wearing the stuffy, conservative FA uniform! Maybe I'm just a traditionalist at heart. ;)

Oh, and I would never even consider wearing those unflattering man-pants they offer as part of the uniform either.

Log in to the ALPA website and there's a link to request your pin. National will send one right out to you.

That's semi-part of some of the things that bother me about Alpa..

Instead of sending me meaningless mail, why not zip a pin out to me? I shouldn't have to REQUEST it..

Oh come on man. I'd rather have pilots request pins rather than using national dues dollars to send out 40,000-plus membership pins just to make sure everyone gets one.

As your LEC rep for a pin, he probably has a few.

They do send your pin out to you with your apprentice membership card. Apparently you didn't send in your membership application, or they have an incorrect address for you. Call membership services to make sure you are listed as a member. If you aren't, then your dues will get all screwed up after your probie year is up.

What do the Skybussers wear?

You know, I don't know I would opposed to khakis and a Polo...

I do not get paid a professional wage.. I am not treated like a professional....

The wages alone are killing the professionalism of this industry.. Do you know how embarassing it is to have someone say:

"Oh, you're an airline pilot, I bet you make goood money!"
"Yeh, $18K a year.............."

and then watching their jaw slap the hooo haaa out of the floor when it hits...

There is more to it than the blazer, the hat, the non-cowboy boot shoes...

Right now I'm at the ripped Abercrombie Jeans, hoodie sweatshirt and New Balances wage level...

Some of the FA uni's show some serious leg . . . very very nice:)

Looks like they are wasting those national dues to mail pins... I just didn't get one..

They send out plenty of useless mail to me that I cannot do anything with.. How much money are they wasting there?

I am not eligible to vote - I am still on probation and I got several Strike Vote packages..

They could have very easily mailed me a pin..

"Hey welcome to our club.. If you want to pin, please submit a request, oh BTW, where's the dues check?"

Now, I'm not Anti-Alpa, trust me, I am glad to have Alpa around..

What do the Skybussers wear?

Basically, it looks like a park-ranger uniform. Green and khaki colors.

You know, I don't know I would opposed to khakis and a Polo...

Yeah, I know what it's like. I was there just 6 years ago. It sucks. But it shouldn't affect your own level of professionalism.

Probably the only issue I have is that if you want to move up in the ranks, it's probably best to show a little grace under pressure. You never know if that guy across the terminal is a hiring manager at a major/freight/corporate outfit you'd like to work for. He may be thinking, "Man, that (whatever) pilot is sharp, looks professional and might be the type of guy our company is looking for, let me go drop my business card off with him" or "Man, what a slob."

They took the app from us in new hire training.. I guess that lies in the hands of someone in the 9E side of Alpa..

I'll call membership services...

I'm all for the current uniform.. Somewhere in this whole discussion that is being skipped..

I don't have any issues with the black pants, white shirt, black tie motif...

Zero..

I keep my shirt ironed, clean and tucked in..
I keep my blazer (when I wear it) clean, lint free, CLEAN..
I keep my shoes clean, polished, etc..
I keep my face shaved..
I keep my hair cut..

I simply prefer the leather jacket to the blazer.

It looks more "pilot" to me.. The blazer looks more bus driver..
