What's the deal with anti-Leather jackets?

I don't actually do any flying in it..

I simply hang it up in the closet, whilst flying..
 
For what it's worth guys..

I have started two threads at two different forums just like these, except they are not "for" airline pilots..

So far.. The "general John Q. Public" doesn't seem to think there is an issue with the leather jacket..

Right now the "who cares what they are wearing as long as we arrive safe" theme seems to be the largest vote..

No, I'm trying to say that there is a place and time for everything, and casual attire (I think it's hard for anyone to claim that leather is anything but casual attire) doesn't belong in the work place.

In another thread, a furloughed USAir pilot posted that when he was a USAir newhire, the company gave them the results of a study that questioned passengers about a variety of things, including uniform appearance. Apparently, by far, the passengers preferred a traditional appearance in their air line pilots.

So AF and Navy pilots in a working uniform who wear their leather jackets don't look "professional"?

Here is quite possibly the best quote from an uninformed public.. Since we all care soo much what the public thinks about how the airlines should be staffed, dressed, etc.. :)

That doesn't mean that it's an absolute.

I would tend agree, but the two are intertwined and have been linked since the birth of scheduled air carriers. Where might the typical design for the current pilot uniform be based from?......The military officers uniform, primarily the Naval Officers dress blue uniform. Pretty much the same uniform in slightly altered to the civilian world. If the miltary can wear a leather flight jacket in uniform and look professional, why can't an airline pilot who wears pretty much the same uniform design wear a leather flight jacket and not look professional as well? Now the hat is what makes it look tacky. Military pilots have luxory of having the garrison cap or fore and aft cap. Each service has their own name for it.
 
One last thought, then I'm done.


When the pilots of Marine One fly the President their uniform includes, durring the cold seasons, the G1 leather jacket.

If it's profesional enough for that mission, then it's good enough for me.
 
Oh and I've really gotta add this: I don't know what we're all arguing about on this one. If you happen to look around the terminal one of these days, we ALL look like COMPLETE tools when we're compared to the Delta guys. I look like a kid playing dress up when I'm standing next to a Delta guy, who's in a tailored uniform and hat that makes it look like (s)he could have hopped off a Panzer and started belching orders in German. THOSE GUYS look good, the rest of us look like hacks.

You know, I was just checking out that Delta pilot situation this morning. I'm in Atlanta right now, and of course I had to do a little research this morning at the airport to see if the above statement rings true. I would say that there is a lot of truth in that statement!
