What would it take for 'the regionals' to cease to exist?

Even props? If airlines want to save money, they'll start flying more turoprops on regional routes and not jets.
You'd save enough money in fuel, you could afford to pay the pilot.

It doesn't matter if they are flying props, jets, or magic carpets. The bottom line is that they are not going to be able to hire enough pilots to fly their aircraft.

The best estimate is that 28% of the pilots at the regionals will stay at the regionals for one reason or another. The rest will move on the the majors the first opportunity they have.

Regionals will continue start small from the wreckage of the last critical mass regional, reach critical mass themselves, increase costs, then be broken up.

The cycle has repeated itself several times and only the names have changed.
