What is the lifestyle of a regional like?

Once you're in a base, the only way you can be forced out is if there is displacement or a base closure.

You can lose seniority in base if more senior people transfer there, but you won't ever be forced out because of this.

If you want PIT it seems it should be relatively easy to get it, most likely on the Q. With Newark most likely opening, people will transfer out. I'm at Shuttle though so don't really know the Republic side.

Are you guys opening, or do you already have open, an EMB-170 base in EWR?

In regards to training... Do you folks feel that the Embraer is significantly more difficult than the Q? I want to go Jet, but had one guy say to take the Dash-8 because it was simpler. That being said, I have never been one to shy away from the difficult classes, or studies.

If they get enough voluntary transfers, they will create a EWR Q base.

A small base though, ~15 crews

Doesn't that make you wonder why they don't just use new hires vs using a guy they just trained on the jet?

No way, the 170 is much easier than the Q. I'd say the washout rates for the Q and 145 are pretty close though.

The 170 is one of the simplest jets out there, the Q is much harder.

So I would want the 170 over the 145 and the Q???
I don't even know which are based at PIT, it may be the 145 and the Q, not sure about the 170 and larger. Maybe somebody can chime in and help me out. I am going to finish up my ATP this month, and then I am going to begin pursuing a job, so it will be nice to have this all figured out, at least in my head, prior to those conversations with the HR folks.

As a new hire, you want what you can hold.

170 on the Republic side (not Shuttle) and the Q both have PIT bases. I'd go for the 170 but if you can't get it take the Q. There are a couple mainline airlines that have 190s and they have been sucking up 170 FO's with 0 TPIC since it's the same plane/type (170/190). I haven't heard the same about 145, CRJ or Q FO's with 0 TPIC.

when is republic going to start hiring for the 170 new american contract? Are they(170's) going to republic or shuttle side?

All of the new birds will be 175s and they will all go to the Republic side starting in June. 2-3 per month with the first few batches going to ORD. This new base will probably go senior but will create a lot of vacancies for new hires in other bases. PIT seems to be the most junior base right now. This will drop the upgrade time for everybody assuming no flying is lost. There is a Republic 170 class in May but it's already full from what I heard. I was told they will have 1 to 2 classes per month from June on out. There is currently a small pool bypassing CHQ waiting for the 170.

supposedly they are going to run a class a month on the shuttle side for the rest of the year. With the AA flying rumor has the projected upgrade time to drop around 3 years on all certs.

I wouldn't bypass a class to wait for a 170, but given the choice, I'd take the 170 over a Q. Automated glass jet time is a good thing to have on the resume when you decide to move forward.

JMHO; I haven't flown either aircraft.

Not sure I follow that logic at all. I wanted to get back out West, specifically to Denver. It was pretty obvious that SkyWest was a better choice than somewhere like Air Wisconsin or PSA. Going on my 3rd year now, seems to be working so far!

Air Wisconsin used to have a BAE146 base in DEN. A lot of people 'set up shop' in DEN as they thought 'it would NEVER close'. It closed. Colgan had a PIT base on the Q. It quickly closed due to operational issues with crews. If it didn't work for Colgan, it is highly doubtful it will work for RAH.

I know that all too well, I used to work with a former Air Willy guy a few years ago.

However, it still doesn't change my assertion that if one wants to live out West, an airline with Western bases (like SkyWest) is a far more logical choice than an airline with eastern bases (the "new" Air Wisconsin, PSA, etc.). I live out West, and I don't commute. That's a HUGE benefit, and is quite honestly the difference between me working at a regional airline vs doing something else. I would absolutely not commute.

Definitely quality of life as a commuter in general is lower (waaay lower) than what you'll have if you live in base. That being said, I would not move for a regional airline. Base closures, displacements etc can wreak havoc on your plans to live in base. Also, if you upgrade to captain, you might find your seniority can't hold that position at your base, so you end up commuting to a junior base for captains.
I would move once, but only for bases that are at decently sized airports with plenty of options for commuting for when the time comes. Smaller basses such as FAT for SkyWest wouldn't make sense, but a base like ORD would.

What happens though if Air Wisconsin gets the LAX flying Eagle used to do with the merger? Or Skywest has the DEN flying readjusted to be flown more out of CLE?

Stranger things have happened in the industry. Don't live in base for a regional.

I've done long distance commutes to reserve.

I've done a short commute that was hell.

I've done a reasonably short (1 hour) commute that's cake.

I live a 2.5 hour drive from one of our bases, and I chose to take that 1 hour commute by air right now.

Not all commutes are created equal, and not ALL commuting sucks.

FAT will probably never, ever close. I'll wind up commuting to FAT before CLE (Seggy ;) ).
