It's been years since I've had a flu-like illness (bad chinese doens't count) but I really feel that
1. Staying physically fit - Weight training (x3/week), Cardio
30min 3x/week)
2. Trying to avoid processed foods and maximizing fruit/vegetables
3. Avoiding dehydration (if your mucous membranes, eyes/nose/throat) stay moist they function properly to avoid infection.
4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose with your hands. This spreads germs right to where they want to go.
And as someone above stated, I think those who were out playing in dirt with bare feet etc growing up have better natural immunities!! It's the people who were always freaking out about germs that seem to be the one's getting sick. I was always knee deep in dirt and never washed my hands (when I was a kid) and I think that is what most helps me today.
My $.02
