Just got in from PHX. Almost nappy time in the quiet room before putting on the monkey suit around 3-ish. Can't resist the free pirate wireless in the terminal!

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

well basically i "qualify" for the ATC job in the navy. i scored well enough to make 95% of the jobs that the military offers. anyways, im going to talk to the navy recuiter once more. he keeps talking to me about this new program called "Excellerate to Excellence."

does anyone know anything about Excellerate to Excellence?

I'd stay away from it unless you want to be an aircraft mechanic. Recruiters are supposed to pitch special programs like the Nuke Program. If this program is something you're interested in take a look and at and ask more questions. I bet the program has a hefty enlistment term like 6-7 years. The other problem I have with that program is that the particular "A" school is not guaranteed in the contract. If you want to be an AC, stick to your guns and get what you want. If they don't want to get it for you, then tell them "See Ya!"

Exactly. The last thing you need is a contract that YOU DON'T like.

I forsee the Navy will start requiring degrees for some ratings. They're already making it a requirement for Chief. Of course all the #### jobs will still be for those who have a GED and scored a 34 on the ASVAB!;)

:yeahthat:

Best advice I've seen in a very long time regarding joining the service. Nice job laying it out, shipmate.

You know that Cadillac Escalade they they put on the full page of the newspaper ad that is brand new for $20k. Then, when you go in to ask about it, they tell you....Oh, you didn't read the fine print. There was only one of them for sell, and it was gone 2 weeks ago. But, I got this 1999 Bronco for $20k. You'll love it! <--- Recruiter = used car dealer.

STICK TO YOUR GUNS. If you want AC, then demand it and don't sign anything or raise your hand under any type of oath until you GET IT IN PAPER FROM MEPS.

And, don't think that you are inventing the wheel here by signing up for that new $20k Escalade. And, the recruiter will probably say something like....Oh, things are different now, those guys that are telling you this stuff don't really know...it's a different world today.

Trust me, the most miserable people that I have ever met in my life were the Nuclear (Nuke boys) program guys that were in the very back of the submarine and were basically walking around with a clipboard checking gauges for 12 hour shifts. And, they all had 6 year contracts for that particular boat. I never met a Nukeboy with a positive attitude. Every single one of them were almost suicidal.

Get what you want, bro. Or, walk.

hey, quick question. once i get out of the military [assuming i do] and im an AC. am i guarenteed everything to get a civilian job as a controller? or will i still need that "degree?"

You are never guaranteed anything, you still need to try and further your education as much as possible to remain competitive for any jobs available...

You'll definitely have a leg up on regular Joe's applying for the position. You'll be way farther down the road knowledge and experience wise, unless they were also military ATC. While you're in USE YOUR TA! Get that degree finsished up.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

If I had to do it all over again, I'd definitely finish my degree BEFORE even thinking about joining the military, and then I'd only join as officer. I see lots of kids who don't know how things work and they think they can enlist and one day eventually get to fly an F-18. WRONG! :D That's what recruiters and the TV ads want you to think. I have never ever seen a TV ad showing my rate. They always show pilots in ads, like that's all there is. Pilots and SEALs...how many navy guys actually get to do that, like 0.1% maybe? Advice for the new guys, do a reasearch BEFORE talking to a recruiter. There are few web sites like military.com where you can find the info.

True that!

I'm using TA right now, and I'm taking classes towards my AA from Excelsior College and TA covers the entire tuition, all I have to pay for is books.

Take advantage of the opportunities. The military really is your friend, and a twisted kind of way. Haha. :)

Ahh... no love for the Mustangs, (make the best officers, :)) It can be done. The Air Boss on my ship was prior-enlisted and eventually found himself fly F-18s. Talk about making things happen.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

I am going to speak from personal experience. I went into ROTC hoping to become an Air Force pilot. I spent all my time and hard work to try to become a pilot and after I got my slot, I got medically DQ'ed for something small, and was even told that no civilian doctor would diagnose me with it. I got recategorized into Intel and to be honest, I don't enjoy my job, mainly because I have other dreams.

If you enlist, you will not be guaranteed ATC. Not only that, but it is a two year school to become an ATC in the Air Force, and if you don't succeed, you will be recategorized into something like airplane mechanic or security forces. Additionally, everything in the air force is based on the needs of the air force. If you get four choices, and you put ATC first, but you have something like "security forces" or "space and missiles" on your list, and they really need security forces, you may end up getting one of your other choices and not your first choice.

Here is another option, go GUARD. When you go into the guard, you actually interview at the individual unit and they hire you into the specific position. If you get hired by the guard unit, you will still go to the same two year ATC school as the Active Duty guys. Once the school is done, you can "guard bum" if you don't have a day job, and if you like it enough, you can try to interview for an AGR position or even a reserve-tech position, which is a fulltime job with your guard unit. Keep in mind that you most likely will be deployed at one point or another, so if being away from home in austere locations for 6 months at a time doesn't excite you, then be forewarned. Otherwise, there are many great benefits to being in the military, and if you get your job choice, you may end up loving it and making a career out of it. Good luck

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

and yes, you will enter as an E-2 with your college education. As far as bonuses, it just depends on the needs of the air force. If the career is critically manned, there may be a bonus, also if you go into a critically manned career field and try to cross train later on in your career, it may be harder to be allowed to switch. If you decide to go active duty and they send you to be a mechanic, you can always try later to become an AC, and if all else fails, you can use MGIB money to go to a school.

well, yeah it's possible to make things happen, but it is harder from what I hear to go enlisted to officer than directly from college. Anyway, going from enlisted puts you through another boot camp and the age might become an issue if you're 30 or so, for pilots the age cut off is 29, so if you procrastrinate....you lose.
