We better all slim down

I say we just have a running race along the length of RWY 29 (oh wait now it is 30) at OAK and whoever gets there last gets cut.

Do you know what BMI is?

Do you know how it is calculated?

Do you believe that calculation could be done on paper or using Excel?

What leads you to the believe that a person cannot obtain their BMI from putting a height and weight into an application on the Internet?
Indeed i do know what a body mass index is. However, i was confusing it with body fat %. My bad carry on.

Yeah. Go all Gandhi. "I refuse to eat anything until my BMI is acceptable again."
Future pilots will be anorexic little kids who have never eaten solid food. (I always dreamed about flying, and always puked my dinner back out!)
Have your wife give that tie a little extra tug, maybe your neck size will fall within "normed parameters".

Let us make normed pilots! Yay! Make them PERFECT!

We didn't believe stuff like this was possible in Europe until they started putting normed parameters on carrots and peas and potatoes.

In order to be sold as carrot, the genetically manipulated [required] vegetable has to be conic in shape, orange in color with a maximum size of [insert silly number here] and have no less than [insert silly number there] and no more than [insert even more silly number right here] of arsenic in it. Then we witnessed normed potato's being plucked by Polish immigrant machines in Germany, trucked to Romania for cleaning, trucked to Denmark for skinning, trucked back to Germany for bleaching, trucked to Turkey to put the right amount of poisonous arsenic in it, before being sold in Germany again as EU potato for $21 dollars a pop + 19% VAT. Don't ask me what they do to shrimp and fish... haha. Of course this is exaggerated just for illustrative purposes.

It's not an either or thing. It's BMI > 40 and 17" or greater neck.
Do you have an official source for that? The bulletin starts by talking about both factors as being correlated with sleep apnea, but then goes on to only mention BMI > 40 as an evaluation item for AME's.

Keep in mind that there is talk of lowering that BMI and neck size number in anticipation of having to paint with a broader brush on this issue.
From what I understand either/ or will suffice, the simple suspicion of a AME that you could be suffering from sleep apnea will be enough to get the ball rolling.

You've got to be kidding me. This is utterly ridiculous!!!!

Further, given the current predicament the government is in, how the hell do they plan on paying for and implementing this?

There is no cost in implementing this. Applicant pays for sleep study and special issuance related items. Applicant can't pay for exams and diagnostics, case closed, no medical.

True, the medical branch might need to put the for hire sign out for a while as the agency is already unable to sufficiently address medical issues in a timely manner. I wonder if Mrs. Obama will implement an equal rule on all government employees, though, which could affect the stream of applicants to more healthy, better people. You can't possibly make all this stuff up, but common sense is spinning at 45K RPM just about ready to fly out of it's socket.

I hope they are going to take wrist size into consideration like the military does when they calculate BMI. I'm 6' and 180 lbs but have a 17.5" neck. (I have a really big head so I need a big neck to support it.)

They've probably handed me a paid medical leave on a silver platter. Getting paid 66.6% of regular earnings for doing absolutely nothing sounds like a great deal to me.

Is that based on a private insurance plan you have against losing your medical? Or would that be paid by your airline?

<== military dude who does not know the ins and outs of this part of the profession.

Ironic how the same pilot who wouldn't dream of running mogas or poor quality oil in the their plane's engine for fear of damage doesn't think twice about putting junk into their body that ruins their health.

Far easier to repair a ruined engine than a ruined body.....

I'm just referring to the linked document in post #1.

We do in fact have a completely arbitrary and scientifically unsubstantiated situation that will cause thousands and thousands of pilots to say "Screw This" when several hundred dollars of expenses are automatically added to their medical certificate process.

I don't know a ton about it, but I have a friend (private pilot) who is a doctor and owns a sleep clinic. From what I understand, several hundred dollars doesn't even come close to what a one-night sleep study would cost. I'm sure this could vary in many regards but if you didn't have insurance (or the right insurance) I think this will really shut down a LOT of people.

The next question is, how do we get rid of this guy? This is absolutely asinine. I hope it doesn't come down to a rich pilot with the money to fight it taking it up. It shouldn't have to go that far for something this crazy.

Hard to say how some of the associations will react and what kind of recoil there will be. It ain't looking nice, that's for sure.
