We better all slim down

My AME mentioned that this was coming when I saw him last year. Seems ridiculous to me, but whatever.

Personally, I'd like to thank the FAA. They've probably handed me a paid medical leave on a silver platter. Getting paid 66.6% of regular earnings for doing absolutely nothing sounds like a great deal to me.

The democrats will spin it as the cure all to the high unemployment rate. Just move a few million working people to the "I just farking give up" category.

Now where did I put my scratch offs?

It's not ok to be fat. End of story. It's not a life choice, you don't have "the thyroid", and no, a diet soda at mcdonalds won't help you lose weight you fatty fat mcfat fat.

this post is loaded with empty carbs and sarcasm

I'm assuming this will be for a first class issuance? I have an 18" neck and I'm certainly a few pounds overweight... But I rarely snore unless I drink alcohol (I know this from my gf and also because I share a room with another pilot when we are on trips...). So now I'll have to go get a test to prove I don't have sleep apnea every time I go to renew my first class medical based on those criteria? What a total crock. I know 2 guys who were in great shape and they had sleep apnea. One even had surgery. One more hoop to jump through.

And what if you do indeed have sleep apnea? Are you supposed to go pay for treatment on the wages we make for the first few years as pilots? All the while your medical is deferred until proof positive your treatment is working and you aren't making income?
Wait what?

When is your next medical due? :)
June... making me wonder if I should just go get another one now and give myself a little more time to drop some weight... I'm not a blimp or anything, I'm 6'2" and 275... But with the amount of traveling I do and the schedule I keep it's not so easy to just got the gym every day. So if I can buy some time it will help ease the transition from fat to fit.

Nope that sounds pretty bad.
Are the hotels with separate rooms booked up or something?
And please tell me you are just time building or something cuz it's early and my eyes shouldn't twitch this much before 8am.
I should of said... We usually book hotel rooms that have a living room, a full kitchen, and 2 separate bedrooms.

Here is the direct link to the Federal Air Surgeons medical bulletin that discusses this: http://www.faa.gov/other_visit/avia...ons/designee_types/ame/fasmb/media/201304.pdf

In it, it says:
The next step will be to require AMEs to calculate the BMI for every examinee (both airman and ATCS) by using a formula that is located in the examination techniques section of the AME Guide and to record the results in Block 60 of FAA Form 8500-8.

Airman applicants with a BMI of 40 or more will have to be evaluated by a physician who is a board certified sleep specialist, and anyone who is diagnosed with OSA will have to be treated before they can be medically certificated.

Your BMI score based on those numbers is 35.3 meaning for the time being you are safe.

Wow.

Based on the number of airline pilots I've seen who just visually appear to be overweight, I think we're going to run into a crap-storm pretty quickly.
My point exactly. If this is executed to its fullest potential, I think we would not even need Kit Darby to tell the future.

This does not affect first class medicals alone at all. It applies to all medicals. Of course one of the supposedly "unintended consequences" is that the sport pilot medical rules will have to be revisited and properly addressed on a regulatory level as the currently proposed system causes downright idiotic imbalance. We do in fact have a completely arbitrary and scientifically unsubstantiated situation that will cause thousands and thousands of pilots to say "Screw This" when several hundred dollars of expenses are automatically added to their medical certificate process. I have a feeling Obamacare will not pay for that examination and related sleep study, which is often non-conclusive as people cannot really sleep well when hooked up to machinery.

Not only will it ground airline pilots who fall into the category, it will also cause inequality in terms of how the issue is dealt with in rectification and remedy. Union pilots will likely be grounded pending full or partial pay, while non represented pilots will simply loose their job for inability to hold a proper class medical certificate. It spells SOL for people like me who have a high BMI due to being short and working out. Saw the picture of another weight lifter... and wonder what his BMI might be? 45? Haha! Pure muscle, probably snores only when drinking, but heck, he's probably gonna have obstructive sleep apnea, better test him?!? Downright idiotic!

The rats tail on this reaches all the way to outer space, so your imagination is your limit. The FAA is already overloaded and administratively incapable to take care of SI's within reasonable time frame, bringing this on will not ease the burden. What we are witnessing is the FAA performing an ultimate poo poo power grab (your choice who to thank for this government over-reach and empire building) but this was well hidden from public light until it was "leaked" to the press.

Scarily idiotic times, indeed. Lets see if and how the industry reacts to this mini blooper.
With the China sell out in full swing, we might get lucky and have all common sense gone from aviation in literally no time... :sarcasm:
