We better all slim down

BMI is the dumbest thing ever.

I'm borderline obese according to the calculator, yet I can climb up a rope into the cockpit.

BMI is a joke. I've been very low body fat back during high school football and according to the charts I was still around a 26 BMI which put me in the "overweight" category.

Like many politicians, Senator James Inhofe uses a lot of 25 year old pictures of himself in his campaign literature. However, if you see a more recent picture of him, he is a BMI 30. So either they will turn a blind eye or we will end up with a Porky Pilot's Bill of Rights.

Do you realize you cannot get a BMI from putting in your height and weight input on some site on the internet?

I have a 24.4 (so called number). How is this accurate? I have no idea. I'm 185lbs 6'2''. I had a 13.7 BMI in high school when I was 6'2'' 300lbs. This makes absolute no sense. Stop putting your reassurance in the internet, at least for personal well being.

Is there some sort of adjustment they did because putting 6'2" and 300 # into a calculator yields a 38.

Also I'm *pretty sure* an AME is going to be able to distinguish between an obese person and a extremely fit person with similar BMI. I'm assuming they will have some sort of discretion here. Even so, let's be honest, the amount of body builders with high BMI's in the pilot ranks is going to be a pretty small percentage.

I think I found an even more recent picture of him...........

He wouldn't happen to be the senator of Naboo, would he?

I'm assuming this will be for a first class issuance? I have an 18" neck and I'm certainly a few pounds overweight... But I rarely snore unless I drink alcohol (I know this from my gf and also because I share a room with another pilot when we are on trips...). So now I'll have to go get a test to prove I don't have sleep apnea every time I go to renew my first class medical based on those criteria? What a total crock. I know 2 guys who were in great shape and they had sleep apnea. One even had surgery. One more hoop to jump through.

And what if you do indeed have sleep apnea? Are you supposed to go pay for treatment on the wages we make for the first few years as pilots? All the while your medical is deferred until proof positive your treatment is working and you aren't making income?

You don't have to be a body builder.

That's me clean and jerking 300 lbs.

Well first, maybe the fitness nazis wouldn't consider you a "body builder", but from a laymans viewpoint you are.

But again some common sense is in order. Do you honestly for a second think the AME/FAA is concerned & targeting you or this guy?

I would *hope* AMEs would have discretion but it's possible they do not. If not, my condolences to the ultra uber fit folks it is affecting, and yes I agree it's BS to send someone like you for testing when you are clearly not overweight.

Do you know what BMI is?

Do you know how it is calculated?

Do you believe that calculation could be done on paper or using Excel?

What leads you to the believe that a person cannot obtain their BMI from putting a height and weight into an application on the Internet?

Wow.

Based on the number of airline pilots I've seen who just visually appear to be overweight, I think we're going to run into a crap-storm pretty quickly.
