Washington D.C. ADIZ and TFR help...

Heya everyone,

I'm in the begining stages of planning a flight from Michigan down to Annapolis in July. I got the first leg down to Youngstown all laid out, only had one nuclear power plant to avoid. After that I went and did the Youngstown to Annapolis leg, and it's looking kinda...well...tricky. The Camp David P40 TFR is in the way, but I can get around that one. The thing that is really bothering me is this Washington D.C. ADIZ. What problems are there in getting a Piper Arrow into this airspace? As I understand it, I should have no issues if I go in on an IFR fligth plan.

Any input for ya'll that fly around the area? I've never had to deal with this kinda airspace before so I don't know what to expect.

Cheers

I flew right flew the DC area last month delivering an Archer from Florida to Maine. Went IFR the whole way and had zero issues.

Hi, John.

Stay IFR the whole way and you don't need to worry about the ADIZ. You can transition the airspace VFR, but you have to have filed a "VFR ADIZ flight plan." Also don't forget to get cleared through Bravo. Actually, just stay IFR.

Have Fun!

But don't call it that around here. The magic words are, exactly: "VFR ADIZ flight plan." Why? I don't know.

What I do know is that you don't get any actual flight following; rather, Patomac Approach treats it much like an IFR flight plan.

Whatever works, I guess.

You won't have any trouble if you fly IFR. The ADIZ just requires you to be squawking a "discrete" code when you fly through it. Since you do that if you're flying IFR anyway, it's not a problem.

Be sure to stay clear of what is now known as the FRZ, or flight restricted zone. The only people who are allowed to fly there are folks heading to one of three airports, and if you are not a cleared pilot based at one of those airports, you can't fly there. Fly there if you're not cleared, and you can expect to see some folks escorting you.

C'mon, the interceptor pilots appreciate it when civilian planes give them the courtesy of a little interception practice.

Sorta like giving airport security a little real-world practice by pulling to the side of the freeway near PHX Sky Harbor, exiting your car, putting a mailing (poster) tube over your shoulder, scanning the sky, then seeing how long the reaction time for them is. They appreciate the public keeping them on their toes.

Hey John,
Funny you should ask this question. I'm just now getting acquinted with the area since I moved up here last week. As everyone has pointed out I don't think you'll have any problems filing IFR. ATC should clear you of any restricted airspace.

A word of caution: they probably will, but don't count on it.

Just to be safe, you may want to pick up a terminal chart. That has the FRZ outlined for you.

I think they're using Customs choppers to do the intercepts a lot of the time now. Some guy who was flying a Cub got intercepted and was told to land at RMN when I was up one time. There were two Customs Blackhawks that escorted him there.
