Warnings for nubees

I would like to see all the warnings/constructive criticism for nubees* in one place so I don't have to see it on every other thread i look into. If thats a problem to anyone let me know.

possible topics may include but are not limited to:
  • pay,
  • working conditions,
  • what if i have to pee for 4 hours and i cant get a break,
  • how bad is actually trying to get time off,
  • :sarcasm:,
  • how does it affect relationships,
  • training issues (ie. miami),
  • CTI criticism**,
  • any other head kicking in we can, and are ready, to receive
With that said, I am excited to start a new career, and I am looking forward to being broken down and rebuilt, however many times it takes. I would just like goto one place for all the critical and :banghead: information I, or any other prospective ATCS, may need before entering the :panic:.

If you are a current or retired controller, it would be nice to know where you are coming from specifically, ie. facility, number of years. This essential background information helps digest the criticism a little bit. Thanks.

* I prefer spelling nubees as n00bs but with respect to queeno I'll proceed with nubees

** keep in mind that attending a 4 year school includes a lot of general education classes which gives a unique and diverse education background to each student that attends the college. I personally took a lot of computer science electives which gives me something fun to do and tinker with that the guy from Wendy's doesnt necessarily have the advantage of enjoying. So before criticising a CTI student make sure you know where they went and give the time to listen to their viewpoint. Then kick their head in.:banghead: Or have them do it to themselves like my animated buddy next to me here.

It's embarrassing to have such a perosn talk about ATC so much and advertise their immense lack of english spelling and grammar.

I'm kind of a n00b here with the FAA and I really think most of the posts here are repetitive and all you need to do is give a quick search for the main topic you're interested in. Or, PM if you have specific question that is fairly brief.

Pay is OK, without comparing to the earlier pay scale, it's alright, but in regards to where you live it may be tougher to afford the monthly rent if you're a n00b developmental.

When you talk about working conditions do you mean the ceiling tiles or the managers? Both are less than fair in most places I guess, this is just from what I primarily read though. The managers work for the FAA directly and are not part of any union or team effort so they mostly act as a manager and sometimes not in the best interest of THEIR controllers.

Unless staffing crisis occurs, you reserve your annual leave/vacation time at the beginning of the year. The most senior controllers mark down their wanted dates then it goes down the line and everybody puts their dates on a calendar.

I've heard of training issues at a few places; there are not enough instructors so students sit around and work one sector or something like that. Over time you should get trained though, might take a while.

There's no criticism about where you come in the faa from, where I work.

Lunch break is a pain, can't use a car, period, or even get a ride from the ops truck back and forth on the ramp haha! and 30 min stinks too.

EDIT: I knew that was going to happen. i didn't even use spell check. edited for politeness.

First of all what does queero have to do with any of your spelling?
Personal attacks are frowned upon here, and high schoolish name misspellings mostly look bad for the person doing it. Please review The Rules to get an idea of the environment we'd like to foster.

That person can't spell for their life and it's embarrassing to have such a perosn talk about ATC so much and advertise their immense lack of english spelling and grammar.

Irony is a wonderful thing, don't you think?

:D

It sure is! :) That is why I generally spell check and give my posts a good once-over before hitting that submit button. And I like to throw a few:panic::panic::panic::panic::panic::panic: in for kicks!

I wasn't trying to attack queeno personally; I just know he has information to share. A lot of us here would like to know the situation we are walking into! Most of us know we don't know everything (or anything (no matter how many years we went to school (5 in my case... woo hoo))). That is why we are here posting and reading; we are trying to gather insight and prepare ourselves as much as possible before we are thrown into it. It's inevitable that some will make it and some will not, that goes with any job. What will be sad is to see the ones that should have made it slip through the cracks because of being discouraged by negative attitudes along the way. I am grateful for the job they've done for our skies, and I am excited to take part in the next generation that hopefully provides an equally safe and expeditious chunk of airspace.

At the risk of being wordy:

p.s.: I was expecting a bit more feedback from this thread. I guess it isn't hair-raising enough. Maybe a rocking banana will help :nana2:

I, for one, am also interested in the pee question. Can you just get up and go, or is there a lengthy transfer process... Just wondering if I should be conditioning my bladder for this job as well as my brain... :laff:

Amen.

I very recently joined this website and had all of my (several) questions answered by simply using the "search" function.
