Volunteering on reserve

Hi all,
I currently am commuting to reserve and am finding myself with an insane amount of free time. Back home, I volunteer at the animal shelter, and a hospice home. Until I'm home based which may be four or five months I'm trying to keep myself from withering away. I've always been active with plenty to do so sitting around in a crashpad is difficult for me.

The on call portion is what makes it difficult so I'm trying to find organizations that won't mind if I have to leave, or can't show up. I've just had enough call of duty

My main question is whether or not any of you have volunteered on the road? How did you find ways to give back to the community/ stay productive during this time? I appreciate any tips. If it helps I'm in MSP with a car

I volunteer at the Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington on my free time. Hike the trails, pick up trash, answer questions, etc. not a bad gig if you're outdoorsy.

Let us know when you're free. We are starting to build a fairly nice MSP jetcareers contingent!

I'll look into that! I seem to be free whenever, I've only been called a number of times. Ideally I'm trying to stay near St. Paul, but everywhere I go seems to want a fixed time commitment unfortunately. I've got plenty of time to keep looking though

That's what's nice about the refuge, all on your own time!

Keep on volunteering, dude. Not only does it build character, it will set you apart with UAL, DL, B6 etc.

EDIT: Hospitals are a great way to volunteer. Find one and you're guaranteed a volunteer position.

Could just jumpseat places around the world while sitting reserve.........thats one technique. :ooh:

I used to sit in LA on long call reserve in ATL. People used to tell me they were made of brass. I just thought that's what you did.

The Minnesota Historical Society usually needs more volunteers going into the winter months as well for all of thief events. Might also be an option if you're into history.

Thanks! That's another one that I would definitely enjoy. Looking into similar things back home in Denver as well.

My wife is a supervisor for one of the sites in downtown St. Paul. Shoot me a PM and I can get you her work info.

Is there a USO lounge at the airport you commute from/your domicile for reserve? They look for volunteers to staff them.
I am planning on swinging by the one in EWR next time I'm in to see what I have to do to make it work, either during airport standby (if they're that flexible) or before/after duty.

I volunteer by holding my couch down. It might float away otherwise. I also monitor the quality of the cable TV signal and fact check the intrawebz.

I've done my bit rescuing cats, two of which were long time blood donors.

Just go into the volunteer interview wearing your uniform with blazer AND hat on and they will be as flexible as you want.

I was too scared to sit long call in ORD at home in SDF. But with my luck the last flight out would be 8pm and they'd call me then for an 8am.

The Bob Hope USO at LAX has the best hot meals and ready-made sandwiches, of any I've been to.
