VNAV, Descend Via and Embray'ers

I was actually chastised by a CKA at our current shop Hacker for doing this very thing. TIMBRS4 into PDX , Left high and fast, cleared for the visual 28R and oh btw look out for the MD-80 landing on the left side. Eff it, I clicked off the AP and hand flew it. It was a beautiful thing. During the debrief I got a lecture on how my knowledge for the automation was "weak" and how come I just didn't FPA it down 3.5 degrees to intercept blah blah blah.. I was astounded....

:bang:

First time in an E170 jumpseat today. Holy cow, that was a nice looking machine. What's up with that BMW i-Drive mouse thing? That was pretty unique. I swear I saw a cursor move on the MFD as he clicked away. Mind = blown

Yeah, it was nice.

Stupid Boeing used a repurposed heading knob for the cursor control on the -8. It's only used for checklists.

Complete. Waste.

*smh* never mind. I guess I won't get an answer.

Sounds like prudent decision making to me...why ball it up in the box, go missed because you weren't configured, etc...etc...etc...

I think I would have responded with a "Is automation a crutch for you? Do you want to talk about it?...ok, no? Sweet, on to the next leg!" (But then again, I'm an ass)

Unbelievable. Routinely, the worst trouble I see guys get into is when they get into a bind and start fingerbanging the flight guidance... an altitude capture inevitably happens and then it all goes to hell.

Click click... flight directors off... autothrust off as need be (on the maddog it was both on or both off typically on approach- I still follow that philosophy on fifi though I'm in the minority).

I always liked the term "MCP Bingo".

However, you gotta figure out why. Was it task saturation, stuff went pear-shaped due an outside influence that the automation couldn't handle, or a lack of understanding of using the automation in that phase? One thing is a way to teach strategic thinking, one is an excellent judgment call and one is a serious proficiency issue.

Wow, doesn't surprise me though. You did the right thing.

A dynamic and high energy state, where everything is broken, and you have configuration changes, an airplane to follow and a screaming dive (I mean, a steep descent...MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!) to final to make is best managed by the use of actual piloting skill and not by finger-banging the guidance panel.

The autopilot and FMC do not understand the command "now!"
