Excuse me? I've had Lasik and was able to do my night freight job then next day...though I took a week off for good measure. It's been over a year and I've met several guys at my airline who have had lasik with no problems. Can you tell me what you base your opinion on? I base mine on the fact that I've had it done and it was the best 2 grand I ever spent....

Don: GREAT to hear that you've had success with Lasik!!! Sincerely!

I have to admit that I'd heard the same thing = that having Lasik is risky because it can ruin your night vision. I believe someone even posted a link to a story about an United or American Capt. who lost his medical for that very reason.

EDIT: Found it HERE Doug posted it last year.

Having said that, after reading your response yesterday, I started thinking "Hmmmm". I'm SICK and TIRED of wearing glasses and/or contacts. It's a pain in the arse!

I will probably check into it somewhere down the road....when I can afford it...... right before I reitre.

I work with a bunch of AF pilots and I have bad vision and was contemplating getting PRK and then trying for OTS where yes, you can get a gaurunteed pilot slot at the moment if you are prior enlisted. Anyways every AF pilot tells me do not get any eye surgery, not because of the risk to your night vision, but because the Air Force just does not know what the long term affects are at this point. Just get a waiver to wear glasses.

Also, if you did go military and you were lucky enough to get a fighter, a C-17, or a C-5, you should be very busy flying and not have to do the bs jobs back at the squadron for 80% of your time then fly for the other 20% if that. After reviewing my options and talking to alot of mil and commerical pilots, I have decided go go the civilian route to get a job flying. At any rate, good luck.

I had LASIK and it did mess with my night vision, but only a little. If I load up on caffeine in combination with being very tired, I can go outside at night and see slight halos around lights, but I can still see them clearly. I don't think it is a problem even if you are one of those small % that have problems. If you do, then don't have caffeine, and make sure you have rest before doing something at night and you won't notice anything.

seems like theres a heated debate on this topic..
I wear contacts, might consider getting lasik in the future..

is there a percentage of airline pilots that have taken advantage of this procedure?
