Boeing to Complete Production of 757
- Completing successful program after delivering more than 1,000 airplanes over 20 years; breakthrough efficiency supported growth in air travel

CHICAGO, October 16, 2003 – The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] announced today that it has decided to complete production of the 757 jetliner in late 2004.

“This decision reflects the market reality for the 757 as well as the growth in range and seating capacity of our market-leading Next-Generation 737 family,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally. “Over the long term, the increased capabilities of our newest 737s and the exciting potential of the 7E7 will fulfill the market served by the 757.”

Consistent with prior disclosed estimates, Boeing will recognize a pre-tax charge in the third quarter of $184 million, or 14 cents per share, principally related to termination and shutdown costs at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Most of the cash expenditures related to the charge will occur through 2005.

Over the past two decades, more than 1,000 757s have been delivered to 55 customers around the world. The worldwide fleet of 757s will continue to benefit from superior fleet support provided by Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“Thousands of people around the world are to be thanked for making the 757 a success story in aviation over the past 20 years. It will continue to provide great value to the world’s passenger airlines and cargo operators in service for many years to come,” Mulally said.

The Boeing Company will release its third quarter results October 29th.

The only news that could be worse would be if I found out that Mexico discontinued production of the VW Bug. Please, will the bad news ever stop!!

My favorite plane will end! NO.

I'm really get tired of hearing Boeing brag about their damn 737 NG line... jeeze, nothing can replace the almighty 757.

Sleek, powerful, and down right beautiful.

This was posted a few months ago as well..

You know, it's just the end of production.. There will still be plenty of 57s kickin' around in the sky

Oh well.........we can always go to Russia and fly those Tupolev's, Antonov's, and Ilyushin's...Wouldn't that be fun now!!!!!! Woooooooooohhhhhhooooooooo

See, here is the difference between Boeing and Airbus. Boeing can't just keep on making an airplane that nobody's buying to maintain jobs.

Airbus, on the other hand, can.

Having said that, I wouldn't sweat the end of the 57's production too much. Boeing is going to use the 7E7 to replace it. It's just like how they replaced the 707 and so on.

Dude, chill. Its not the end of the world. There is still a wide variety of airplanes flying around out there. I'm sure there will still be 757's flying around for a loooooong time to come. Hell, theres still DC-3's, Convairs, etc. doing regular freight runs!

Yes,yes the B-757 will still be flying around the skies for many years to come.

I'm just 18 yrs.old and when I have enough hours to apply to Delta. I might maybe start off ona B-737 and when I finally can bid 757/767 the aircraft could be more then 20 years old.

Verses the possibilty of flying a brand spankin new aircraft if Boeing kept the 757 line open.

Now before the eye rolling begins bout my last comment. Also consider that many airlines are very seriously considering getting rid of there 757/767's if the 7E7 comes online.

What that adds up to as someone mentioned earlier in this thread is reduced aircraft choices to fly. Which might maybe mean less hiring which course means less pilots in the future.

But still the 757 is a sleek beautiful very attractive, sexy aircraft with performance that no other aircraft can touch.

It's my favorite airplane and it's so sad to see it go. Oh well if the 7E7 looks like it does in the prototype pics. and does what it promises to do I might just have a new favorite commerical airliner.

hahaha, I always get a kick out of people that say stuff like this (especially before they even begin flight training).

In reality, you will fly whatever someone offers you a job flying- beggars can't be choosers!

Actually I have already begun my flight training. I have my private pilots license and nearing the end of my instrument rating the commerical and multi are next.

Then CFI-ing is next can you imagine me as a CFI?
tongue.gif

But your right I'd fly anything the hell outa any plane that an airline told me to fly. But I can still have a preference can I not?

Oh, I wasn't picking on you individually...sorry if it sounded that way. But yes, you may have your preference!

I'm gonna go on & tell ya that I'm gonna miss the 757..i know they will still be flying but one day they want..anyway...I think AA will replace their 757/767 line with the new 7E7..probably when they're financially able to...dont really know if they will get rid of the 57/67 but will just replace them soon in a few years....

7E7....

I havn't paid much attention to it. But its Boeing kind of pulling the 727->757 replacement type thing?

Well I guess my chances of getting to fly a 75 are getting Slimmer. Long live the 757!!!!! I just hate when stuff like this happens, it really brought a tear to my eye

Finally....I can bid over to the 757. I've been on the 727 for years and I really like older planes. Could never fly some brand new jet...just wouldn't be prudent...
