VC-25 Carrying A Deceased Dignitary

When using a VC-25 (or any aircraft from the 89th), would the crew use the common "SAM" callsign, or would there be a special callsign for the occasion?

I would assume they would be "SAM 123". At HMX-1 we never used anyting but "Mairne One" when the president was on board or "Nighthawk 456" when he wasn't. Including VIP lifts.

I heard this conversation durring a Presidential lift.

RDU Twr: "Marine One cleared for take off."

Mar 1: "Cleared for take off."

RDU Twr: "US Air 123 execute missed approach"

US Air 123: "Say again, tower?"

RDU Twr: "You heard me."

US Air 123: "Rodger, going around."

Thanks, Mech...I knew that you'd probably be the one to answer that!!

HMX is a pretty impressive squadron. I have a special dose of respect for the whiteside flight crew. I know a former whiteside pilot that's really proud of that!!

At HMX, do the VH-3 crews that fly the president fly in their flightsuits? Seems I've seen the pilots once or twice (through the cockpit windows when the president is being filmed embarking/disembarking) and they seem to be in their Khakis.

Dress Blue "C" (Blue trousers, long-sleeve khaki shirts, tie, white cover) or Dress Blue "D" (Short sleeve khaki shirt, no tie) I believe. i'm not sure if it's one of the above or if it's seasonal.

Is the "C" uniform the one with the blue trousers that have red stripe? Is that a "relaxed" version of the formal dress blues? And is the "D" uniform the khaki shirt with the OD green trousers?

Does the USMC have seasonal uniforms like the Navy does (eg- navy blue/whites)?

The pilots wear their class D blues, which are the khaki shirt with the blue trousers. If you have ever endured driving a car while wearing dress blues, you know why.

The Crew chief wears the full dress blues. He useually does a full preflight in his flight suit and then changes into the uniform. Another mech will do the last minute check, and observe the engine start.

Same goes for the VH-60

There are two "C" uniforms. Service and Dress. The letter pretty much defines the level of formality.

So, the Service "A" uniform is the green blouse, long sleeve khaki shirt, green trousers and ribbons and badges on the blouse.

Service "B" loses the blouse, keeps the shirt and tie and the ribbons (badges optional) go on the shirt.

Service "C" is the green trousers, short sleeve khaki shirt and ribbons (badges optional) on the shirt.

Dress Blue "A" is the blue trousers, blue blouse, ribbons for which no medals have been struck on the right side of the blouse. Your medals then go on the left side of the bouse, with no badges.

Dress blue "B" is the same outfit, with no medals - only ribbons and badges on the left side of the coat.

Dress blue "C" is the blue trousers, long sleeve khaki shirt with tie, ribbons on the left side (badges optional).

Dress blue "D" is the blue trousers, short sleeve khaki shirt with ribbons (badges optional) on the left side.

The blue trousers only have the red stripe (blood stripe) for NCO's (E-4 and above) and officers. It's in memory of the battle of Chapultepec, during the Mexican-American war. During that battle, 90% of the Marine Officers and NCO's died taking the Mexican stronghold.

There really are no seasonal uniforms. Typically, Service "C" uniforms are worn more frequently than others.

MTSU & USMCMech, you two are definately squared-away. I'm pleased.

USAF only has, from most to least formal:

Mess Dress: Formal dress uniform, no hat, miniature-sized medals and badges.

Class A: Blue blouse, blue long-sleeve w/tie, blue trousers. Ribbons worn left side, regulation-sized badges on blouse/coat, miniature sized badges on shirt underneath.

Class B: Lose the blouse. Long sleeve shirt w/tie, or short sleeve w/o tie (some nitwits do wear the short sleeve w/tie). Miniature sized badges. Generally, enlisted wear their ribbons on the shirt, officers generally don't.

BDUs (utilities for you guys): Currently woodland-camo standard. There is a blue/grey abomination that's coming out, with grey boots, and a 6-point USMC-style cover.

Flight suit/jumpsuit: Green for aircrew, blue for missile launch officers (though missileers/space are now changing to green).

I couldn't even begin to tell you what the female uniform combinations are, nor would I catch if something was out of place with them...unless it was glaring.

Question: Why do Marines wear metal badges and rank on their utilities, as opposed to embroidered ones? For example, captain's bars and gold jump wings?

ACK!!! Subdued....lol. We never wear subdued because it just looks nasty....

. Really, military appearance is the only reason. It was proposed a few years ago to the uniform board to switch to subdued, but it never happened.

Most of that fru-fru is just taken off in the field (except the rank insignia.

Mike D, You are quite right. Those BDU are horrible. In what type of environment are those supposed to give someone concealment?

Are those blue boots I'm seeing?

Wasn't only about 6 or so years that the Marines went to embroidered "US MARINES' and "NAME" nametapes on the utilities?

BTW, I do have teach you guys the correct way to roll the sleeves of the utilities....

A little bit longer that that. Just after the first Gulf War....about 1992. Remember the Iron-On "US Marines" with the Emblem over the left breast pocket? That went away, and now there's only the emblem.

Trivia (no Marines or Sailors can answer...). Where else do we have a name-tape on the utility uniform??

Back to the orgional topic:

My wife asked me something that made me think. She said "Shoud you be puting this information about the Presidential aircraft on the internet?"

I assured her that I had thought about that very question. My rule of thumb is - If I read about it from another public source then I will post it. Obviously, I know more about this subject than I will talk about openly. Although if you know what you are looking for then the secret stuff isn't so secret, and most of it isn't really high tech.

The main thing that needs to be kept secret is the presidents exact travel scheduale. If you pay close attention, you will notice that the media NEVER reports the exact times of his arrivial and departure until after the fact.

In short I ask the Moderators to edit any posts that say something like "Air Force one will be landing at PHX at 1035 tomorow" I have seen this posted on other forums before (A.net I'm talking to you).

It may sound like paranoia, but I don't want some terrorist to know exactly when AF1 will be taking off , so they can be waiting with their stinger in the back of a truck.

On a side note since Clinton was constantly running late this wasn't as much of a concern.

Don't worry, I know exactly where you're coming from. As a mod, I keep the forum fights to a minimum, edit questionable material, do away with trolls and posers, and also keep one eye cocked for any OPSEC issues. In reality, very few ever pop up around here, simply because there's not that many active-duty people here, and of those, I think I'm the only one in a really sensitive position, so policing my own posts and what I talk about is really most of what I have to do when talking shop. But since we come from a variety of mil backgrounds here, we should all use common sense in what we post, and I agree, if any truly questionable material (OPSEC-wise) pops up, then we'll deal with it then.
