UUUUUGHHHHHH today was a huge mess

Yeah thats one thing I am expecting. I am a little bit concerned about getting too dependent on using the GPS. Will take a little bit of adjusting.

Man I just checked aims and after todays flight I have already spent 6300 or so. My private is going to cost me around 10 at the least.

Yikes. Oh well. At least I am going to have some extra time but it comes at a pretty high cost.

hehe. over break i rented a 1980 c172 with a black and orange screen GPS, no NDB, inop VORs.... was pretty dang fun!

most of the button labels were rubbed off, or on there with a label gun stick-on haha!

oh, and it took me FOREVER to figure out how to get the comms to tune between .02/.07 and .00/.05 !!!

was a fun time though! check my pics on facebook

You're lucky you even had GPS haha. Seems that most old rental airplanes have at least a VFR GPS. The ones I rent are pretty old but still in good shape, with the exception of some label gun stickers to replace worn buttons :D

Oh and another thing. People under rate the frequency of your flights. How many days in between your flights are a huge factor with my progress.

It is hard for me to carry over what I learned from a flight if it was a week before.

Thats why I am really excited to go to an FBO. I rarely want to go more then 2 days with out a flight and will fly several days back to back especially on weekends.
call me up, we will get you done in no time ;)

honestly i prefer the Bendix 89B over the G430 for some things. maybe because i did 75% of my flying in airplanes that had one

Yeah but I am going to go somewhere with all year around flying weather after the semester. I have applied to transfer to ASU and I am going to apply to Fresno State as well.

I am currently waiting for my stage check instructor to call me back. I am hoping to go up and get 14 done so I can start moving on this weekend.

Here is what I am concerned with on my stage 14. Knowing where those dang reporting points are when I come in to grand forks. I may end up asking approach for some vectors.

truck stop = looks like a truck stop

east ponds = looks like ponds, and they are to the east

kelly tower = is a tower, near kelly farm

puddle = looks like a puddle, frozen this time of year.

oh it was fine once i flipped through a few pages to see how it worked, just, primitive, and different. worked just fine though

Try not to ask for vectors - they want you to be able to navigate with pilotage and dead reckoning. If you take a trip out to Ryan Hall sometime, there's a poster up by the briefing rooms that show and eagle-eye view of the airport and reporting points which might be helpful. You can also buy it at aerostop.

it is also on the 102 lab site, or at least it used to be.

kinda nice being on my side of the ramp, if i send a student solo and they are unsure of the reporting points, i just tell them to inform approach they are "unfamiliar" and they will get vectors or a different report instead :D

i hate finding kelly tower, but the other 3 i am really good at. Kelly farm is easier to find than that stupid tower

I still have trouble finding "puddle". I don't believe anyone knows where that is. I've had 3 different water shapes pointed out to me as being puddle. I've had the lakes that kinda look like they spell the word "puddle" be puddle, the lake right before, and after those as well.

That and wasau sometimes. I hate coming in from the SW. I know approximately the distance these two points are from the airport, so most of the time I just fly a NEasterly course toward the airport and call the points when I hit that distance.

I remember the first time I flew up here and was told to come in via truckstop. I could not find that for the life of me. I'm used to the Iowa 80 truckstop(the biggest truckstop in the states, maybe the world) and other big huge ones that are farther south of MN. This truckstop wouldn't pass for a normal gas station. :D I think I might have accidently announced to the tower "you call that a truckstop!?!?!?!" haha

To this day I still have about a 5% chance of being able to identify and fly to puddle, including the Wasau group of homes. I still have NO idea where they are and what they look like. There are so many friggin' swamps out in that area - wastlands such as what the rest of North Dakota is - a piece of waste and a waste of my time to live here. LOL

Kelly Tower is easy for me to find. The lagoon/east ponds is easy and I'd say truck stop is the easiest. Carpet Girl has a huge sign painted on it's metal roof saying "CARPET GIRL." It's hard to miss.

i can find the tower without too much problem

finding the farm at night = not possible

at night it has a yard light, so easy to find. tower still is hard to find.

puddle is easy, it is the crescent shape body of water. Wausau is 2 different "clumps of trees" situated just south of HW2, about 3.0 DME. the trees are 1sq. mile clumps and situated SE-NW when flying in from puddle.

I am going to the aero store asap tommorow and getting me that poster.

I just got off with my stage check pilot. I am surprised he is a student as well. I have the oral tommorow and the flight test on friday. He wants me to bring all my work sheets that I did before my flights. I did them all but I never went back to correct them if my instructor found something wrong or anything. Should I bother to go back and correct them?

Ohhh snap. I have to go start slaving over V speeds/Emergencies/FARs and especially the airspaces.

Does anyone know what Arrow stands for?

Airworthiness Certificate
Registration (US)
Radio Station License
Operation Limitations/Handbook
Weight and Balance

I can tell you, that wasn't on my 14. Basically straight from S P&P and the limitations of a student pilot. It only takes about half and hour.

Does anyone know what Arrow stands for?

MEL
Airworthiness Certificate
Registration, Federal (State too, but not required legally...ask Mr. Venhuizen about this hehe)
Radio License, FCC (if flying internationally)
Operating Handbook (the official POH in the binder on the back seat, not the POH you use to calculate performance in the flt planning room)
Weight & Balance data of the aircraft to be flown (this does not mean the W&B you calculate with AIMS or by hand...that is never required...only by UND)

Thanks guys. There are a ton of stuff listed on the stage 14 study guide. Like Basic Weather mins and flight rules for every airport class. I am hoping its mostly policies and procedures. I still need to review my VSpeeds and the emergency test. The emergency written test will be sooo funnnnn dontcha know.
