USAir announces daily nonstop XNA-DCA

ZapBrannigan

If it ain’t a Boeing, I’m not going. No choice.
I don't know which regional will be flying this pairing, but for your PA announcement accuracy, it is not "Xena" it is "Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport" with extra credit for "Serving Bentonville, Rogers, and Fayetteville". :)

In all seriousness, thanks for this service. Thats a big deal for this area.

Looks like it's on a PSA 50 seater. They already do it out of Charlotte, so I'm guessing they've got the whole "serving the general area between Tulsa and Ft. Smith" thing down.

AWAC used to do that out of CLT as well, a long time ago. I don't think AWAC does it anymore so must be PSA doing that one as well.

Ah ok, sorry. You still in SFO or OAK? We're doing a lot more flying out there the next few months. Might run into you.

Nope. We moved back east in August as the commute as kicking my butt. Our lease here is up in June and we'll be moving somewhere more civilized then. Just not sure where yet.

Did US-Air get more slots into Dc....This was in the MSP paper today as well:

Seeking to attract highly coveted business travelers, US Airways said Wednesday that it is launching three nonstop flights from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Washington's Reagan National Airport this summer.

Wish we'd get some nonstops to Boston from here. That would be sweet. Right now we have:
  • ATL
  • CLT
  • CVG
  • ORD
  • DFW
  • DEN
  • DTW
  • IAH
  • LAX
  • MEM
  • MSP
  • LGA
  • EWR
  • LAS
  • SFB

Yeah, I remember when Eagle made the switch from the FAY airport to the new XNA airport. We actually got a memo in our mailboxes to announce it as the "Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport". That wording, and that wording ONLY. Not just "Fayetteville", or any 1 city. We were really told to leave city names out of it, since there were SO many that contributed to that airport and serve it, so to not piss anyone off we were told to use the airport's proper name and leave it at that.

The hotel we used to stay at was in the middle of NOWHERE... When I went to DFW for my instructor interview I got stuck in DFW due to WX in the ORD area, wasn't going to make it home that night, and of course all the training dept people were gone for the night. So I called up scheduling and asked to go somewhere for the night, any overnight would beat sleeping in the DFW crew lounge. I got a XNA overnight. All I had on me was the uniform I was wearing, and my kit bag with my manual. No clothes, no toothbrush, no hairbrush, no makeup... But at least I had a place to sleep that night! :)

Sheesh, A! You were roughing it, huh!!

Yeah, I know :D

(Hey man, me with no makeup is a pretty scary sight! :bounce:)

When I was marooned in NY in the summer of '02, I spent many nights in the JFK & LGA crew rooms. Sometimes I'd get a couch, sometimes I'd get in late and would spend the night on a couple rolling office chairs pushed together (which, as long as you don't wiggle around a lot, is really not all that bad). But every night I spent there, I found myself thinking of all the people out on the streets of NY that night. I thought I actually had it pretty good where I was those nights, I was inside, with a/c & heat, I was safe, I was pretty sure I was going to get through the night without being raped, robbed or beaten. I had it a lot better than a lot of other people in NY those nights....

The XNA airport is actually located in Highview which is next to Bentonville which happens to be where Wal-Mart is located.

I seem to remember the XNA airport being located about 7 miles from Wal-Mart headquarters. Prior to XNA opening in 1998 (and being dedicated by then President Bill Clinton arriving in Air Force One) the commercial airport for the area was in Fayetteville which was a 45 mile one way car drive to Wal-Mart headquarters.

USAir was actually the last airline to leave the old Fayetteville airport. I believe the original flights from CLT-XNA were served by Mesa using those uncomfortable Embraer 50 seat passenger jets. Eventually the CRJ's won out on that route.

XNA is a great airport and has served the area well over the past 14 years.

There was a wonderful restaurant about 20 miles out of town called The Mill which I found to be very good. I haven't been back to XNA in several years and I don't know if the Mill is still there.

The new DCA slots are a result of the swap between Delta and USAir. USAir traded Delta LGA slots for DCA slots.

I remember the XNA airport being very bright, lots of windows, up in the gate area. It was nice being in a brand-new airport, where everything looked & smelled "new" :) Unlike some of the scary corners of ORD....!
