USAF: F-16 pilot in midair collision lacked sleep

I certainly would never argue that I don't fly better on a full night of sleep than 4 hrs. That said, this isn't an issue specific to drilling guardsmen/reservists. Fact of life when you are constantly switching between being on the night page, and the day page, and then back, and then back again, and doing everything else in between. I'm normally good going from day to night, but that first day back on the day schedule is always a crusher, as it typically is at the very limits of crew rest requirements. And anyone knows that being "afforded the opportunity for an un-interrupted 8 hrs of sleep" does not equal 8 hrs.....especially when those bastards are doing no load cat shots and dragging chains all over the flight deck right above your head all night....

I can see mentioning fatigue as a contributing factor, but it sounds like this report latched on and ran with this theme.

It just doesn't smell right that fatigue was dominant issue in the closing seconds of an intercept. I would have assumed he was distracted keeping track of his wingman/trainee or other task.

Yeah agreed. It would be a little easier to figure out what actually probably happened if we knew who was who in the zoo...

Lack of sleep slows the scan down, but I've never had it be so bad that I wasn't able to not hit a wingman or a lead. Higher order things.....sure, you will probably goon those away. What I could see is getting focused on the student and accidentally busting out of the blue block and hitting the red air.

There seems to be some obvious control with the statements given.

Does anyone know what his civilian career is?
