USA Today: Planes with Maintenance Problems Flown Anyway

I wonder, though, in this current climate of high gas prices, reduced profit margins etc, if the airlines can afford to do heavy maintenance in house?

The era of a Joe Patroni at each airline might be becoming a thing of the past, as some airlines seemingly outsource their heavy MX.
 
I am about sick and tired of USA Today. They have spent the last 6 months lambasting aviation...especially GA. I think any pilot out there carrying or reading a USA Today in view of passengers should be kicked square in the jimmy.
