US Airways starts hiring

Think. Of 1800+ furloughees, only 22% accepted recall. Why?

I could give you my reasons. I loved US Airways. It was the airline I wanted to work for since I was a child -- (well technically it was Allegheny then, but you get the picture).

This is not the same US Airways. The payrates and work-rules have been decimated. The integration will create bad blood for decades. There is no commuter policy. There is no trip improvement. There is no passing.

Think.

Why did only a fraction of those of us hired by US Airways in 1999 elect to return to that company when we were recalled?

Just a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood former US Airways pilot.

You are right about the fact that it's not the same Airways it once was (and in fact, I have no desire to go there) but for a lot of people it is MUCH better then what they are doing now. It may no longer be about the "dream job" that some pilots look for but rather about getting the best deal you can. Airways CAN offer that for many folks.

Also, the deal with PSA and PDT... what was posted was just the pref hire. We are still working on a flow through. The pref hire allows UP to 9 pilots from PSA (and I think 7 from PDT) a month, based off of seniority, to have an interview with mainline. This is NOT flow through. All four unions and management are working on that still and there is hope that it will happen some time. Interestingly enough anybody hired under the pref interview clause will be covered by the flow through clause if and when they work out a deal. There are two big things related to flow through that aren't included here. Firstly, in the event of a furlough at mainline, there would be spots open at PSA and PDT and secondly, PDT and PSA pilots "flowing" up would retain some of their longevity. Or that's the theory at least.

Zap, while all of that is true, it's still a major improvement for the guys at the regionals. You have a great corporate job that allows you to spend a lot of time at home, so it's a different decision for you. I certainly wouldn't leave AirTran to go to USAir, but I definitely would have left Pinnacle to go there, even with all of the issues with seniority and such.

Okay, am I the only one who almost choked when looking at the E-190 payrates for captains. So wait your telling me that quite a few regional Captains at top pay are making more than a legacy Captain?

Ye gods, USAirways hiring, what has the world come to?!? When I was a little guy, I dreamed of flying for USAir... But I grew up in Pittsburgh the son of a USAirways mechanic, watched as USAir screwed the employees, gutted a once proud hub, and went through a series of, shall we say, not so labor friendly managers. I don't know, though. I'll nonrev on USAir somewhere, especially on their 757s and 737s, and I'll get this odd sense of what she once was; what I remember from my childhood. There is still a kind of spirit about their "older" ships that brings back a lot. But nostalgia is not a good excuse:laff: Still, it's kind of a jolt (even though expected) that she's hiring. I know newhires are ERJ190s, but man oh man a million childhood dreams of being a USAir Boeing 757/767 pilot based in the proud city of Pittsburgh have been remembered. Damn, that sound of those RB211s really brings back a lot of good memories. Haha corny
