US Airways Hiring

So are you saying it has not been confirmed where the SOC will be located after merger? Also, how soon would you expect to for the move to take place?

Would these new hires start off in PIT and then move to DFW (if SOC will indeed remain in TX) ?

I work for a Express carrier for US Airways and there is no indication the operation in PIT will stay there!

My understanding is that there has been no announcement yet either way - I would think odds favor DFW but you never can tell. When US and HP merged I would have said odds favored PHX or CLT over PIT.

Everything is just speculation and rumours at this point. Most likely to remain at the current Flight Academy IOC in DFW but it could very well end up being PIT. Also possible, is American Eagle moving to PIT and US Airways to DFW. As of now, these are just rumours and nothing is official until announced through official channels. All that is certain is there will be no split SOC operation so dispatch will be combined.

Yes, that is what I am saying. No one has said one way or the other where we will be and there is absolutely no point in speculating either way. Same goes for the timing of a possible move. I'm sure the money game is being played with DFW and PIT; neither of those cities wants to lose a bunch of jobs. No one on any of the transition teams has called to ask my opinion on the matter so I will just go where they tell me, when they tell me. Hopefully it is anywhere BUT PIT. I'd take someplace on the south pole over PIT.

It is my understanding the new hires (10) will start here in PIT. The latest I heard is they are shooting for a class in Jan. Pay starts at $18.xx per hour, plus $1.40 license premium upon completion of training and passing your initial comp check (approx 5-6 months).

I think DFW offers the better location employee wise in terms of non-reving and climate. PIT gets very cold and snowy in the winter but it does have a pretty low cost of living. Non rev would be nowhere near as nice from PIT as from DFW.

I personally think DFW is the better place. Even if it has a higher cost of living, I really dislike cold winters. I would be overall happy in either place.

I'm the opposite; I like the cold and snow, and LOTS of it. The cost of living in PIT is ridiculous and I hear taxes are outrageous (renting until we figure out if we are moving so I don't really care at the moment....).

DFW probably would be easier to non-rev out of though being a hub. There is a LOT of seniority here in PIT and it's tough to get a seat out I hear.

One of the big merger questions is whether to do US Airways seniority for non reving or the AA time of check in priority for non reving. I think the pilots will want seniority because at US you can reserve the jumpseat a week out and its much easier to do that in a seniority system than time of check in.

Second big issue is that at AA dispatch we minimum fuel most of our flights because of the fuel bonus. At US Airways, they give a lot more fuel and dont have a fuel bonus.

The second part will be probably need to be worked out by the time mutual contract is up, that could take time, vide United/CO.

Actually, there has been a lot of pressure at USAirways as well to min fuel most of the flights for fuel savings. The mainline Union has fought this tooth and nail, and USAirways hasn't really stood up to them much on this, but they are really putting the pressure on the express carriers. At my carrier, our policy is min fuel all no alternate no tanker flights, and if pilots add more fuel, to file an irregularity report. For these reasons, I suspect that the AA policy will eventually win out. Because there is a financial incentive attached to it at AA, that will have a way of bringing a lot of the US guys around. Not to mention that if USAirways ends up closing PIT, a lot more of those guys will retire.

A few, maybe, but I would be shocked to see a lot of folks come around on this issue. Right or wrong, there is a lot of, "I've been doing this • for 20 years, and I'm not letting some guy who never had a dispatch license tell me how to dispatch." attitude. I can see adding some extra fuel going to places out west where there isn't an on-line alternate that's close. On the other hand, I'm perfectly happy going to a lot of places on the east coast with little to no hold fuel where there are four airports within easy reach. I can't tell you the last time I had a flight hold into PIT, CMH, JAX, etc.

Out of 165-ish people on the list, I think it will be a small percentage of people who decide to retire if this thing moves out of PIT. I'm a low guy, so I hope we hire a bunch though, lol.

I know that that culture persists at Mainline, and I don't expect a lot of the old veterans to come around on this issue. I simply stated that because complying could mean an extra 16K or so a year on your pay check, that is a lot of money to leave on the table. Not to mention that if the numbers get skewered by the US guys, the whole group loses and gets a smaller bonus. I have been doing the job nearly ten years myself, and I am always looking for ways to do the job better, and I am fully aware that you save money by not adding unnecessary fuel, which only helps the employees in the long run.

Follow Up Interviews? Do you know something I don't?

I know of someone who interview and received an email stating that someone will contact them by phone, to follow up on the interview. I don't remember the exact language of the e-mail but it sounded like, interview went wel and HR is taking over. Trying to confirm.
