US Airways Debate

Oh you have a point, but don't forget that "routes" does not mean "capacity."

You aren't going to fill all that LGA-IAD-BOS-DCA-CLT-PHL etc flying with RJs! Talk about gridlock ...

[/ QUOTE ]

And you won't get RJs. If you think the majors won't move their MD-88s, 737s, etc. onto city pairs where the yields are up and competition is down, you are missing something about the portability of airplanes.

One of the deleterious effects of too many hubs was the need for small airplanes to keep frequencies high. With fewer hubs you use larger airplanes and still keep the frequency up.

That's true. I'd like to see that more at LGA. I flew in there the other day and it had an RJ fungus all over it - from four different airlines!

Unfortunately the east coast would turn into RJ Ville...just look at the god awful mess at Dulles every day. Not even Philly and Charlotte are THAT bad. United has turned that place into a mess and Indy Air has just made things ten times worse. It's a lot easier to move a code share regional carrier in to pick up the slack on a route. There's less involved...less staff, less equipment, no jetway sometimes...it wouldn't make sense for everyone to haul their parked 737s and MD-80s and what not out of the desert just to find that they're flying them 1/3rd full. I think a lot of people out there think that there's just this swarm of air travel out there that refuses to fly US Airways but can't find a decent way home. It doesn't exist. US Airways connects multiple small destinations in the NE (Erie, PA, Elmira, NY, Albany, NY, Bangor, ME, Charleston, WV etc) to Philadelphia and connects those passengers to outgoing long haul flights to Florida, the west coast, Chicago, and Carribean and overseas routes.

I would LOVE to see Southwest step up to the plate and haul the little old lady to MUNICH from Erie, PA that I pick up in the morning. Go for it Southwest...take your 737 up to Erie, pick up 30 people, and fly them non-stop to Munich.

Flying the US Airways side of the house has taught me one thing...that some people just really don't want to fly Southwest...and some people just don't want to find another way home.

United can take their youth in asia.

1) Continental is poised to take as many Pacific routes as they can, and increase capacity to cover more. They had a crew base out there at one point, Phillipines wasn't it?

[/ QUOTE ]

I think CAL Micronesia is based in GUM. Right now CAL is trying to get their costs in line, so I don't know how they'd react to jumping on Pacific routes. The desire's there, just not sure if they're able right now. That being said, I think they're in a position where they could finance some expansion if they needed to.

And in each of those cities, the passengers can also ride on at least 3 other airlines to their hubs, then connect to all of the same places. Eliminate U, and each and every passenger will still have a choice.

But, with the exception of the Beech destinations, each and every USX city is serviced by a combination of jetBlue (much better choice than an RJ), Delta Connection, Continental Express, Northwest Airlink, American Eagle, and United Express. Pull out a USX RJ and the others will easily pickup the slack. There is an excess of capacity in these cities.

Well enjoy the right seat then...I know I did before I got furloughed. Hope you get JA'd the 737...

When did you get furloughed? Thought you awarded PHX? Sounds like a move up, to me, especially with all the shiny new CR9s coming your way.

JA'd to the 737? Won't happen. I'll be too busy in the next few months fighting to get you better work rules and payrates.

Well thanks to your logic and the ineptitude of our MEC at Mesa, it'll be any day...so I doubt I'll ever see any of those shiny new CR9s...

Big picture bro, big picture. You're not seeing it. My logic is shared by the majority of folks who've been here long enough to understand the industry.

You'll see the CR9s. U will be around through at least June, at which point you'll be fine. And if you do get furloughed, why worry? It'll be a lot more money than you're making now!
