US Air Force Faces 500 Fighter Pilot Shortfall

FWIW, the commitment is already ~ 10 years……technically 8 for USN/USMC pilots (not sure for USAF), but that starts the day you get your wings, which for most folks is about 2 years or so after commissioning.

I did neglect to mention that he should be careful what he wishes for. USAF is 10 after winging.

How F'd does a situation have to be to have people typically 8 or less years away from a 20 year pension having already done 12 and people still walk.

I'm sure it's only gonna improve in 10 years when people without a 20 year brass ring to go after are at the end of their ADSO...

I tried to do the waiver thing with the Guard in the mid 90s. 20/20, already had 5k hours and lived in town. Bad news was I was about 2 months outside the age window. No Bueno as far as they were concerned.

Later on, as they got more desperate and loosened up the age thing, I kept missing the hard cutoff by 6-8 weeks each time. After about the 3rd time I gave up, and took it as a karmic message.

Yeah I'm probably going to have to expand my horizons to ATC (which I'm interested in anyway). Guess I should've gone outside a lot more as a kid instead of playing pokemon.

2030 will be a crazy year: that will be the first year that pilots under the new retirement system will be eligible to get out.

Well that's about 5 years after my pocket of F@cks no longer has to be refilled so not my problem. At that point my hopeful only exposure to that generations military will be being that old asshat parking his car too slowly at the PX/commissary. Who am I kidding... It'll be the guy with too many bottles and not enough hands using the class 6 to avoid the state liquor tax.

you'll be the guy going 10 under the speed limit all the way to the gate, then somehow forgetting to bring your ID card, necessitating the controlled all hands gate u turn :)
