Update from Airnet training...

I'm on the run leaving BKL (Cleveland) right now and quick turns the rest of the night, but I'll try to get some updates early tomorrow AM.

LOL!

That airport has been a mess for the last week or so. I'll be glad to see it back to normal.

I've been flying from LCK-IND-BKL-AGC-LCK-LUK-LCK for a little over a week, getting some IOE, and now I am awaiting training for a "floater" position in Burmingham, AL. While waiting, I am basically acting as a floater here in Columbus, doing that run. I am flying that run tonight, tomorrow, and next week, then training and eventually moving down to Bama. For those not fluent in the identifiers, that equates to Columbus, OH to Indianapolis, IN, Burke Lakefront (Cleveland), Allegheny County, PA, Columbus, Lunken, OH (Cincinatti sp?), then back to Columbus. This morning, I had to go back to LUK, then back home, on top of all that. 6.5 hours ME PIC in the logbook.

I am still keeping my fingers crossed for a different floater run, since the Burmingham one has a 5 on, 2 off schedule, and all the other floaters have an 8/6 schedule. It's all about the QOL, now, right?

Flying the line has been great. The weather has been very nice, a couple of TS en-route last night, but nothing major. I still haven't flown anything but visuals, but I know my time is coming soon.

I did hear a Delta getting questioned by Center last night...the conversation went something like this:

DL: Center, Delta requesting a deviation to the left for weather.

Center: That will take you right into the center of that stuff, but that's approved.

DL: Well, since you probably have a better picture of this stuff, can you stear us clear of this?

Center: You're right in the center of it. Anything you need is approved. I wouldn't have went that way in the first place.

And then silence. It's not verbatim, but you get the picture.

Well, enough for now. I'll try to keep posting every once in a while, but between this schedule and flying back to Jax on the weekends, time is limited. Take care...time for a beer and dinner.

Airnet is aggressively for sale - mostly because post-Check 21 there is no way they can be profitable. Get their latest annual report before you jump.

It may be a great place if it lasts long enough for you get what you want, but depending on who buys them and for what purpose - maybe not.

I will not respond to this crap. Go back to Flightinfo.com. Thanks for the positives. JA

PS and yes I am well aware of what is going on all around this industry!!!!

How bout you go to a sort in Columbus or take a peek inside some of the airplanes and have a look-see at what's in there.

Check 21 is no secret...but they've been on the ball for years prior to now spreading out their business and branching into other markets. Any company is for sale for the right price...hell I could buy warren buffet if I had the right amount.

Federal Reserve Check 21 info

[ QUOTE ]
The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check 21) was signed into law on October 28, 2003, and became effective on October 28, 2004. Check 21 is designed to foster innovation in the payments system and to enhance its efficiency by reducing some of the legal impediments to check truncation. The law facilitates check truncation by creating a new negotiable instrument called a substitute check, which permits banks to truncate original checks, to process check information electronically, and to deliver substitute checks to banks that want to continue receiving paper checks. A substitute check is the legal equivalent of the original check and includes all the information contained on the original check. The law does not require banks to accept checks in electronic form nor does it require banks to use the new authority granted by the Act to create substitute checks.

[/ QUOTE ]

It allows banks to electronically copy and transfer checks from bank to bank rather than being required to physically move the actual paper check.

Aviation International News report on possible effect of Check 21

Airnet loses $6.6M in contracts

(Note, to offset the gloom and doom title of this last article, even though Airnet lost the two contracts worth $6.6 million, it had revenues of $175 million in '04, and: [ QUOTE ]
"AirNet reported a profit of $316,000 in the first quarter, up 6.3 percent from the first quarter of 2005 <typo?>. Its revenue rose 9.2 percent to $40.5 million in the first quarter.")

A ton of checks, along with branching out to pharmaceuticals, organs, HAZMAT, and numerous other items. They have been preparing for years for Check 21 and are trying to get out of the public market...the reason we are for sale. This way, we don't have to answer to a bunch of stockholders only worried about their bottom line.

Do you see a lot of Quest Diagnostics stuff?

Wheelsup,

Personally, I haven't, but yes we do have Quest stuff we ship.

As far as an update from me, I had been doing a route pretty regularly, finished that last Wednesday night, found out I was a Columbus floater (the position I was wanting) on Wednesday night, flew to Bradley, CT, Thursday; did a route out of there: BDL-TEB-PHL-TEB-BDL-BOS-BDL. I then flew home for the weekend, came back and did training in the Piper Chieftain (PA-31-350). I finished my checkride tonight, and will be on reserve ("floating") here in Columbus for a couple of weeks on a 4/3 schedule, then go to Caravan training on 25 Jul. Once finished with that, I will start my 8 on/ 6 off schedule. Once it's all tallied up, over 3 months (end of May - beginning of Aug), I will be qualified in 3 airplanes; 2 ME, 1 turboprop, with a lot of flying in between.

I am extremely happy with everybody I have met here, and am enjoying flying every day. I received my first (semi) full paycheck and it's nice not having to file for food stamps

. They are awesome on helping me with the living in FL, flying in OH, and elsewhere, aspect of the job.

As I get the privilege of flying around the country I'll try to post every once in a while on where I'm at. For the most part, I'll be trying to visit here some but it might be limited due to a very unpredictable schedule.

Good luck to everybody out there on pursuing this crazy dream!!!

I heard floater positions get paid more? And how are you able to live in Florida and fly out of Ohio? Do you have a crashpad at one location and an apartment at another? And how do the floater schedules work are you on call. Do you just pick up trips from that base?

Scoobs,

"Floaters", or reserve pilots, used to make quite a bit more than the other pilots, but due to our schedule change and changes in pay, we no longer get more than other pilots. We used to get travel pay, and other items, but now only get it if it's on our off days. We still get per diem if out of our home base, though.

As far as living in FL, I commute to work. I have a crash pad in Columbus, and a condo with my wife in FL. We have "cabin only" jumpseat privileges on just about any airline, except the big 4, so commuting hasn't really been an issue.

Floaters are on call during our days on, typically Wed. to Wed. We then have Thurs. to Tues. off, unless required to travel. So, some floaters will fly home Thursday morning and go back Wednesday night unless travel requires us to leave on Tuesday. As far as picking up trips, I have had no problems. Every day I have been scheduled, I have flown. I have done routes out of LCK, BDL, and PHL. I was in PHL 2 days this last week, and flew the other 2 in LCK. I go to Caravan school on the 24 Jul, and then I will be on the 8-6 schedule. Right now, I am on a 4-3, coming home on the weekends only.

[/ QUOTE ]Which are the "big 4"? More specifically, do you have jumpseat privileges on NWA?
