Absolutely right. It was a much bigger risk 10 years ago. I can remember seeing and flying with people who left the airline I was with, went to a major, and came back on the bottom of the regional barrel again.Oh ok. I gotta be honest, I heard a lot of that in the 2007-2011 timeframe at 9E, but I left very early 2012. Although to be fair, the legacies at that time were operating on BK contracts, severe stagnation, furloughs, minimal to no hiring, economy sucked, etc.
2014-present....... whooooole 'nuther story.
The complainink about the M88 from the people who have moved on...particularly from Barbie's Nightmare Jet...is pretty spectacular tbqhwy.I've been reserve in NYC for the past 6 months. The flying is great (73N) and the commute has been pretty easy from MSP. I think most of NYC talk is like that of the 88, they make it seem worse than it really is.

There's lots of people who have lived in the NY Metro area (or reasonable commuting distance from it) for years and have established lives that are a good fit with all the things you just mentioned. A job based in NYC is a great thing for them. I know @sorrygottarunway is missing his malasadas, but happy that he's living in the Big City again, and I'm sure, even though @Rocketman99 likes his new gig, he'd be happy if they had a NYC base with good seniority. That's the great thing about this industry... there's something for everyone.
Which one, in the myriad of interesting choices McD's made on that airplane, is your biggest gripe? It's a right of passage for new SJI pilots who don't fly the 88 to make fun of pilots that get the 88... yet they trip over themselves to fly the 717 which pays less, does longer days, and still didn't fix my second biggest gripe about the 88.

Plus, I like a machine with character.
I take it you have not witnessed the miracle of EPIC 27 on the E-jet."why did it stop descending!?"
"why is it trying to add power in a descent!?"

Come out of reverse.Biggest gripe: thrust reversers.
Second biggest: leaky windows.

I've only had one or two leaky window experiences, although we don't tend to get snow piling up and then melting along the outside edge of the frame so much.
I hear ya! I really can't believe people painted the pic of 88 as being so awful in new hire class. On day one (I arrived with a year and a half of 717 experience and "we really flew that airplane" if ya know what I mean) guys were bid avoiding the 88- even so far as taking an aircraft with a commute as opposed to being based at home on the 88. 5 months into the job, I was holding princess senior mama day trips to Bahamas/Florida, flying with the same 4 local captains, home every night. And this is the first time in 3 (maybe 4 years) I'm able to attend two consecutive weeks of music festivals (my last gig pro-rated days off when you had vacation, so it would either screw up the front end or back end performance days with the orchestra, when you added in travel days). There are captains on the 88 that have been there 25 years, and now will go to the 717 because it is something familiar and goes out of EWR. Again, there is something for everyone depending on your wishes!

Better hurry up. 88s will be gone by 2020, 90s by 2025 according to the latest fleet forecasts. That's really sad. I'm jealous of them even being able to have that opportunity. The MD-80 is my all time favorite aircraft, and I've wanted to fly one since I was a little kid. My dream is to get on with them so I can fly the MD-88. That is my ultimate dream to fly that bird. I'm surprised so many people treat it like the plague. It's such a cool airplane. Maybe I'm just a big nerd, but hey more MD-88 flying for me if I get the honor of working there!

I mentioned that once in the JS. Crew said I was crazy. Guess there's no point in applying for me since I clearly won't pass the psych eval...That's really sad.
