United

Look at the work schedules of AA vs the others… 4-3-4-4 and 8 hour shifts… you have much more time off or the ability to pick up more OT etc
DL and UA also have 8 hour shifts. UA for sure, and DL offers variety of 8,9,10 hour shifts to choose. Now the AA union spoke to the newest dxers still in class saying the company is considering changing the schedules to something similar to Southwest, 6 days on and such. I don’t care if it’s 6 on 1-2 off and then a large chunk off at the end of the month, I personally hate that. And they’re discussing possibly making about 30%, or the bottom 150 dxers all relief lines. Everything is subject to change, and nothing permanent or set in stone. Just saying I hope for all AA dxers the pay will be competitive in the future to UA and DL, especially being the largest airline in the world.

License Pay of 692.25 is a bit of a misnomer.
It’s actually 2 payments a fixed and a variable.

Fixed License Pay is a static $370 a month

Variable License Pay is 4.5% of your monthly base salary.

So while the 692.25 total is correct, the variable premium is actually $322.25. That number will go up every step up the ladder, and will also go up if there is a raise to the base pay on the scale. For instance, the variable premium itself effective 12/1/24 at top of scale is $604.31 monthly (add $370 for that for the total premium). It could also go down if there’s ever concessions and pay cuts.

That would be awful if American's union didn't fight for the new employees. They should all have the same 4-3 4-4 schedule. If they concede this to the company it would be a huge mistake. Management will keep asking for more concessions.

Can you choose which schedule you want listed on the spreadsheet, or is it by bid?
It’s based on seniority mostly. Desks are assigned a shift that’s either 9 hours or 10 hours. The more senior people tend to take the 10s since they end up working less days. 4 on 4 off vs 5 on 4 off

From what I understood, the possibility of 6 days on 2 off at AA was in reference to those on relief lines. Not everyone.

Is there a 4-3 4-4 option for the 9 hours?

I think this would be a big mistake. Dispatchers would choose American last among the majors, and new hires who are still in relief working 6 on 2 off would switch to another major. Lot of turnover and displeasure among the new employees.

Which relief would potentially be the bottom 150 dxers or the bottom 30%, which could be for a very long time. They’ve already hired so many, 5 classes of 30 in the last year. I presume those folks will be at the bottom for a long time to come now. It’s not enticing for them to stay, or for new folks to come if they change it to 6/2 and get paid $10-$20k less than the other two. I hope they will keep it the way it is now 4/3, 4/4. I know you didn’t say this next part, but AA isn’t technically 8 hours, it’s 9. It’s just how the schedule falls at the moment to make it 8. This could always change back to full 9 as well.

Agreed. Dispatchers would choose other majors first and their new hires would jump ship to another major asap.

Wouldn’t it stop making sense at some point to jump ship because of pay?

Not if you’re able to do it within the first year or two. DL and UA now will be around $94k first year before any OT. That won’t happen for AA for a few years, unless it’s renegotiated. You get $85k with AA, and only $64k during their incredibly long training. Most people struggle and spend on average 2-3 years give or take, at low paying regionals before coming to the legacies. Why wait another 2-3 years if you can obtain the best and most competitive pay now? Especially after inflation and mega rising rents, rates and mortgages. And especially if one of the best reasons someone came to AA to start with was the awesome 4/3, 4/4 schedule but now that changes? If you’ve already been there a few years, yes that could be kinda silly since you’d lose seniority… unless the culture is bad as well. Either way it will deter people from applying to AA to start with if there’s more competitive pay and benefits out there with companies who have just as many perks.
