United Hiring (again!)

Yes, thats a valid question. Unless...They use the desk check more or less as teaching moment. They could just throw a bunch of "gotcha" situations at you or they can make it paractial yet thorough and truely assess your abilities and if needed, suggest more training. I think someone on this thread mentioned that they NEED good dxers, so they are not going to try and wash us out of the program. What manager wants to hire a h100 new staff and then begin kicking them to the curb?? Not exactly vision of success. Instead, they should try and support each person and get them on the floor asap. Perhaps a few newbies commrads could share their experiences with us.

Did I used to work in HR?..NO. But I did stay at a Holid.......
No one has washed out from what we know. Though there are definitely individuals that needed a lot more remediation and training than the normal new hire

United isn't there to just purposely make the checks ridiculous and make you fail. They want you to know the material and know how to run the desk esp when abnormal like holding diversions and mechanical failures enroute occur.

In my new here class, I'd say maybe 2 individuals out of the 20 were struggling and needed more training and had to work harder than the normal new hire and even then, they're doing fine after more remediation.

People failing their first test/check is very normal. Doesn't mean you're a bad dispatcher or that united is setting to fail you. It's set up that way to make you successful when you work the desk as a fully qualified dispatcher

Thanks for all the great comments guys!! Here's another nutter butter peanut butter sandwich cookie...question.
What are the desks workloads like in the domestic side of the office?
Do they divide up the CONUS or is all just willy nilly? Is it possible to have DEN-LAX all day? Or ORD-EWR...?
Thanks again for all the great replies.

There are east and west coast and transcontinental. Mornings have more flights than an afternoon or midnights

Thanks Yurie. That leads to another question:: What is the schedule at UA and the Start times?
And do they pay the full dx salary while in training?
Thanks Again!

Schedule for line holders is currently 5 on 2 off, 5 on 5 off, 8 hour shifts. However, you will initially be on vacation relief upon sign-off until a line opens up for preference and you have the seniority. This normally would take closer to 5 years in the past but with the rapid growth, those with about a year of seniority have been able to bid for a line.

Shift times are 0600-1400, 1400-2200, 2200-0600. Yes, you get your full salary during training with the exception of your license premium, shift differential, and overtime until your signed off.

They need to switch to Southwest or American's schedule. They also work eight hour shifts due to overlap. United seems to have the most working hours among the Big 4.

Otto...THANKS for the info. Good stuff.
So I have my in person soon. But I really dont feel comfortable in a suit and tie. Im a big guy and I get sweaty and nervous and just cant stand wearing a suit and tie to a job interview. Especially at a place where, once you have the job you can bascially where anything you want.
I have heard all the reasons why one should..."dress for the job you want..." blah blah blah...but really? I mean we US Senators that dont evern wear a suit and tie!
I just need one person to tell me it will be okay if I just wear my best slacks and polo shirt.

Noooo!! AA has the worst times. 0500 show, is insane!! The best donut shops open at 0500 so you can never go get the fresh hot glazed that we all love so dearly. 0600 should line up with the donut logistics just fine!!
However, as for number of days worked per month..yes it seems a bit high comparitviely. But 5 days off in one click is makes it little easier to travel bwtwn shifts.
Also, UA has PAFCA right? (the first ones to do so, if i recall) so do you guys have ECB (like AA) where you can 'bank" OT hours or Holiday pay. From what I understand they can trade ECB hours for swaps. But either way, it all gets paid out at the end of the year. Seem like a good idea.

Depending on how much you want the job will dictate how you dress. I know of someone who showed up for a job interview at a major in polo and slacks and didn’t get it. When he reached out to a buddy at said airline they told him “you always dress in a suit and tie for an interview.”

Just gonna throw out, if you wear anything less than a suit and tie as a male, you will be looked at negatively and seen as someone who doesn't want the job as seriously

I've seen a bunch of people coming in for interview, I've seen 2 in polos and khakis and they were for sure underdressed

United is next up for contract negotiations. We haven't had a "new" contract since 2014 per se, only several LOA updates mostly addressing cost of living and pay increases. Im hopeful that this is addressed in the next contract and some more quality of life improvements are considered. United has lost several good candidates to SWA lately and I'm sure management has noticed. Hopefully the SWA contract can be looked at and used as leverage during negotiations.

As Yurie said, please wear a suit. If you really want this position rent one for the day if you must. If you're worried about wrinkling or having to wear it all day, don't. I hung mine up in the airplane closet and changed at the bathroom airport and wore it as little as possible. I felt I interviewed poorly, was already stressed enough, but I gurantee you I wouldn't of gotten the position if I didn't dress up and I would of immediately felt underdressed. Consider the fairly casual dress code a reward for getting the position.

Agreed. American has even fewer working hours.

I personally think that a sport coat plus dockers/long sleeve shirt/sport coat and tie is the best look for a dispatch interview, but a suit is fine also. I feel like the sport coat makes you look dressed up but still business casual, if that makes any sense. But yeah, unless the company specifies business casual/no tie for the interview (I have only ever seen this once) I would dress up a bit more than what you’d be wearing if you get hired.

a significant chunk of my class is internal no DX experience I.e crew schedulers, airport ops etc
Good to know. I don’t work for United but I’m at another major doing W&B on the ground Ops side. Really trying to avoid the regional route if I can but it sounds like internal at my current shop may be my best shot.

yeah wear a suit. treat it like the most important interview of your life, it probably is. i don’t like wearing mine either, so luckily i got the job i wanted and don’t ever have to wear it again
Seriously. I own a suit for two reasons. Job interviews and weddings. You get one first impression so make it a good one. And for the love of all that’s holy. If you wear a white button up, make sure it’s cleaned and steamed before you put it on. Nothing like taking your jacket off in a warm interview room to see pit and neck stains on a shirt.
