United Exits Ch. 11

They're "back". What are you guys' thoughts on the future for our 2nd largest carrier?

I pray to god they do great! One day, i wish i can fly for them!

Long live UNITED!

Remember from a United flight!

Why is United recalling some of their furloughed pilots when they are losing more money over the last few quarters than any other major airline?

It seems that American's furloughed list has remained at a constant 2,888 for several years, but they are losing a lot less money than United and are getting somewhat close to profitability once again.

Any geniuses around or is it just me.

In addition, what do yall make of Glenn Tilton's statement about the stock plan (see below)? What do you make of United's management team now that they have exited Chapter 11? Have they changed for better or worse?

Associated Press: How do you explain your thinking on the management stock plan, which some unions and outside critics maintain is excessive for a company that has asked its employees for many concessions in bankruptcy?

Tilton: It is in everyone's best interest for management to have a higher portion of their compensation at risk, and tied to the performance of the company's stock. In this case, the value of the plan is purely theoretical and depends on the performance of the stock over the next four years. Importantly, all of our employees will share in stock in the new company.

Because they're going to post $10-15 Billion in net profit 1Q '06.

Neither of them. Gonzo, I will bet you $100 and a case of beer that they post a $5 Billion profit this quarter. What say you?

I thought he was joking at first but now I'm not so sure  .

The press release I saw, put out by United, called for $915 million in profit for the entire year, and that was with oil @ $50/bbl.

Did you know that Chris' mom wrote for the National Enquirer? Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, or so I've heard.

Go back a few weeks and look at the thread about United. I posted that they would exit bankruptcy on February first. This was way before any press reports or anything of that like.

Now I come out saying UAL will post an obscene profit in 1Q '06 and you guys don't believe me? After I listed the DAY that they'd exit bankruptcy?

It has been known for quite some time that United was planning to exit chapter 11 on Feb 1st. I first heard it last October.

As for how long....I give them 1-2 years before they finally fall apart. Nothing has changed about the way they operate.

As to the question as to why they are bringing pilots back on and AA isn't. Attrition at UAL is pretty high compared to the American side. That simple. Profit in Q1 06? I don't think it is going to be that high. I don't think they are going to die anytime soon. They would merge with somone before that happens.

I'll extend the "$100 and a case of beer" (or a nice bottle of vodka) bet to you, $5 B is the over/under :)

I think there is some validity to the rumor that they will merge with Continental. Some validity, not a massive amount though. I'd actually not want to see that happen, but indicators are pointing in that direction.
