United Airlines Furloughs 290 pilots

What exactly is United's plan short term and long term?

Most of the bigger airlines really are "too big to fail". There are lots of reasons to keep them going, either by loaning money, reducing lease rates, or both. Just look at the bankruptcies of the past few years.

Airlines long term plans are to merge.

If a certain regional company's largest mainline partner disappears, the same can be said for the regional company's subsidiary's pilots.

There are no words to describe your character my friend. None. Just hope your real name isn't revealed because I'm sure you know aviation is a small world.

Why?

Because you think that a United pilot should see their company's failure coming - 10 years in the future?

Yet, if I'm not mistaken, you are a Skywest pilot are you not?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but. . .

United is Skywest Airline's largest mainline partner.

The failure of United would certainly have large implications to not just United, but every regional partner they utilize.

I just think it's quite shallow to expect a United pilot to see his company's failure ten years down the road, yet you want to ignore the further implications of the company failing - which would directly affect your job security.

I just don't see how it was out of line for me to make that connection.

All things aside, if I was at United this whole time, I would have been working on plan B. If this airline goes under, and your a pilot left without a job, your not too bright. You had the writing on the wall for almost a decade and did nothing about it. My heart goes out to them.

Not sure how me connecting Skywest's future to United is so taboo now, when you just pretty much said that every United pilot should have seen this coming - yet you think the regional pilot(s) are excluded from seeing this coming?

Come on man. Quite the high horse. I suppose you didn't want anyone to make that connection, so now we need to get emotional?

None of us are guaranteed a damn thing in this industry.

Bottom line is, I hope it doesn't come to any of this. It's a very sad state of affairs, but I would hate to see the huge tidal wave that would develop as United crashes into the ocean, wiping out many more people than just "United's" employees.

Anyway - sorry.

Many of us already know his real name, and have met him several times. He's got a recommendation at at least one major airline in his home town for whenever he gets the minimum times.

I caught a jumpseat on a United A320 the other day.

The airplane was spotless, and the crew was spectacular and totally accommodating.

They deserve better than this.

:yeahthat:

They were a ride to and from work (from time to time) before I was furloughed. Great crews for sure!

(BTW, how's the surfing coming along?)

You know, you could have just said BOTH major airlines!:D;)

While we argue and ridicule each other all the time, Surreal's a cool cat so he'll have no problems with his name being known Mrivc. If you truly believe what you said about the United pilots then you yourself as a SKW pilot needs to start preping plan B because ''the writing was on the wall'' Heck even ASA pilots should start preparing. Why the emotional outburst?

BTW Oct is goin to be a BIG month for ASA peeps. I aint sayin no more:D

I see this turned into a skyw vs ASA thread. Again.

How so?

Because he made one comment regarding something happening at ASA? Marcus does this all the time, moreover, he didn't even reference it to another company. So, weak argument regarding ASA vs. _____ (anyone) - but if that's all that we have now, even after me challenging your position and statement, in an effort to seek some clarification . . . then I suppose so be it.

His second sentence referenced how silly it was for a regional pilot who's company's largest mainline partner's pilots are to somehow be psychics, yet this individual doesn't want to acknowledge the fact that the sinking of their largest mainline partner also negatively impacts his/her ability to make a living?

Seems quite ballsy. But, it's an easy fix really.

Perhaps my analysis is way off, but it appears that I'm not alone in picking up on the contradiction you've placed

You guys got it all wrong! Someone pointed out that one should have a plan B and someone else added that the first someone should also have a plan. Hilarity ensued.

Sad for those United folks. I can't imagine finally getting your career job after paying your dues, to get furloughed. Thats like trying to swallow a razor blade. I'd be pretty depressed in their shoes and probably just staying out of the industry for good.

The sad reality is that EVERYONE should prepare for plan B. I'm planning on going back to school and picking a solid back up career option.

I think those of us at the Regionals, particularly the right seat, are looking at a very small career window. About the size of a CRJ or ERJ side window. Any hopes for a mainline job in the next 5-10yrs is probably unlikely.

This isn't the first time the industry was like this. When I was a baby, I lived in Ohio twice, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin before I was 4. That was all aviation's fault!
